Jean, where is the mid-afternoon shade coming from? If it is a tree, then the reason the little YTT isn't thriving is probably because of the tree roots. Those roots extend out well past the spread of the branches, and a lot are near the surface. Some plants just can't compete.

I plant shrubs and other vigorous plants under my oaks in large sunken pots, and let them get a bigger root system established before I lift the pot and put the shrub in the ground.
