Coir would be prefect! Thanks for the idea! I'll keep them outside in full sun - at least in the morning. Some of the soil in my back yard is marl with more than usual clay. I'm thinking if I surround the mud ball with some of the marl, it would help with water retention to some degree. Otherwise I can just stick the whole thing in a bucket of water every couple of days if it starts looking parched.
