Glad it sounds like everything worked out. Old peonies are sturdy soldiers and columbine can be equally resilient.
When plants just have to go (they end up at my house) with the exception of mints and lambs ear, those days are gone, gone, gone!
I always call friends, neighbors, or post some sort of ad to Craigslist. Folks love a mature plant or cutting, they'll often come and dig their own if the price is "free".
