Until this Spring, I only had annual (to me because of my zone) Salvias in containers and never had that situation. I decided this Spring to plant some zone 6, as well as, annual Salvias in containers. (I don't know if the hardy ones will survive the Winter in a container or not. We'll see next Spring.)

Maybe @FBTS can chime in and answer your questions.
