Lynn, I use Calcium Chloride probably worst than salt. It melts the snow if the temps are lower than freezing. I have so many leaves that fall normally the area is covered if I do not blow them off. I did not blow them off last year and When Spring came we had so much rain I think some of the sedum died from moisture.

I think you plan of covering them with pots is a good idea then when the leaves fall they will not suffocate them.
