I plant them and put 2" of mulch on top of the soil and they are on the patio. I plant Spring Bulbs, Asiatic lilies and , Oriental Lilies in the pots too.
I do have very large pots though, I do not know how big your pots are which might make a difference. My pots are 4' tall and 4-5' wide.
