Dwarf Chinese Astilbe (Astilbe rubra 'Pumila')
Icon for preview
Have
Sold as 'Lilac Astilbe hybrid'. Have lost some in too boggy conditions and too dry. Currently succeeding in a damp bog amongst Louisiana iris. Flowers well, persistent when happy. Increases slowly. In this site tolerates a fair bit of sun (zone 8a).

Baboon Flower (Babiana nervosa)
Icon for preview
Have
Beautiful pleated velvety foliage. Attractive violet, mauve and magenta flowers. Late frosts burn the exposed foliage so there is a browned tip to the older leaves in zone 8a, but flowers are after frosts. Forms large clumps over time, which still flower well without dividing. Self-seeds in gravelly soil but not in heavily mulched soil.

Smooth Water Hyssop (Bacopa monnieri)
Icon for preview
Have
Nice little fast spreading groundcover with tiny white flowers for damp spots, water edges or bogs.

Grows vigorously on the north side of my house.

Chinese Ground Orchid (Bletilla striata)
Icon for preview
Have
Really easy, slowly builds to a clump. Beautiful bright pink stands out in the garden, there is also a white variety. Grows well under some shelter from a deciduous shrub/ tree in zone 8a, however late frosts if badly timed will hit the new shoots, leaving the tops of the leaves brown and ugly, and if more severe may also destroy the flower buds.

Image

Common goldenstar (Bloomeria crocea)
Icon for preview
Have
Tough and easy, not terribly showy, better naturalised in wilder areas or a filler popping up through low growing perennials.

Image

Wild Hyacinth (Brodiaea californica)
Icon for preview
Have
Variety 'Hollywood Star'. A bit brighter more pinky lilac than the species. Not showy, good naturalised, especially in wilder areas, or popping up between/through other perennials, such as low growing Alstroemerias or amongst smaller Alliums.

Image

Silver Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost')
Icon for preview
Have
Very beautiful silver etched foliage. Mine hasn't flowered yet. Good low growing shade plant, suits under deciduous trees.

Bulbinella latifolia
Icon for preview
Have
Variety 'Robusta'. Gradually builds to a lovely clump around 70 cm tall or more. Shiny dark green strappy foliage. Very bright daffodil yellow spikes of tiny densely packed flowers with fluffy stamens that open from bottom to top over a long flowering period in early spring. As clumps increase they have more and more flowering stems. Drought tolerant, full sun, easily grown.

Image

Beautyberry (Callicarpa giraldii)
Icon for preview
Have
Fairly new but lots of growth and even berries in its first season. Grow several in a group to increase berry set. Purple tinge to leaves in Autumn. Not fully deciduous in zone 8a. Still holding onto berries now in mid spring. Vigorous and healthy shrubs.

Image

Hybrid Camellia (Camellia 'Debbie')

Image

Camellia (Camellia japonica 'Desire')
Icon for preview

Beautiful flowers, formal fully double white in centre grading to pale pink outer petals. Not vigorous or healthy but needs moving to a better site (too full shade and too poor heavy clay soil).

Poscharsky's Bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana)
Icon for preview

Need to check ID, may be C. portenschlagiana. Surviving and spreading in moderate shade right at the base of an evergreen Eucalyptus tree, though fewer flowers than in a better site. Mingling with Dichondra repens, both of which are growing through heavy wood mulch.
