Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) |
Have New Perennials this year Herb |
These have been here forever. They have quite a bit of grass growing amongst them. I may need to do a major clean up weed and try to plant some more afterwards. 2023: I got the idea to start a bunch from seed to fill in if I ever clean that mess out. They came up pretty good, but I only ended up with a few to plant out. They're back near the garlic chives, out of the grass that's taking over the rest of the chives. |

Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) |
Have Herb |
2023: They're still there, but not looking very robust. 2022: I got some of these with the intention to weed the chives and put these in to fill it back in. The weeding didn't happen, but I did jam them in there late in the season. |

Dill (Anethum graveolens 'Dukat') |
Prev Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS, average, 1-2', summer. An improved strain with excellent flavor is much leafier and slower to bolt than regular dill. A good choice if you are more interested in the leaves than the seeds. Reseeds readily. Plant in succession for continuous crop. 2020: 2 plants were kind of spindly. Maybe not enough sun? |
||
Dill (Anethum graveolens 'Fernleaf') |
Prev Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS, average, 24", spring-fall. Attracts bees. Host for black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. Shorter & more attractive than regular dill. Tastes & looks great in a jar of pickles. 2011: Prettier than regular dill. 2009: Made pickles - it was good. |

Cilantros (Coriandrum sativum) |
Have Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, average-dry, 18-24" We have a small raised bed in the corner of the vegetable garden for cilantro. One year it took over the whole box and spread into the grass nearby. It was lovely to smell when you cut the grass! I've never had that much luck again, and my hopes of it self-seeding in the box to where I don't have to replant every year have not happened. So I throw seed out there most years and hope for the best. I really want a healthy crop of the stuff so I can just go cut some when I need it. 2022: The box was overgrown with weeds this year so I just dug the whole thing up and added a wheelbarrow full of compost to bring the level of the soil up again. I bought five 4" pots with 3 starts in each one, split them up, and planted. We were late getting home from Mexico this year and things have been a bit of a struggle, getting such a late start on everything. Hoping for the best, but they sat in the greenhouse for a couple weeks and were pretty root bound with each other by the time I ripped them apart. Update: I haven't been paying attention and it looks like they all went to seed. Maybe that will be a good thing? Doesn't give me much cilantro to harvest though.. 2017: I'm finally started to get these established so they will self-seed themselves. |

Basil (Ocimum 'Corsican') |
Have Herb |
2023: 7 nice starts from seed. I finally got them all in the ground after working my ass off cleaning up the kitchen herb garden. Still needs some work... I did get the herb garden cleaned up quite a bit and all the basil did well. I didn't pick any of this one I don't think.
Basil (Ocimum americanum 'Lime') |
Prev Herb |
FS-PS, moist, rich soil, 12-16". Pinch tip from center shoot after 6 weeks to encourage bushy growth and pinch off blooms to keep from going to seed. 2021: I got a few from seed this year and they were healthy. I threw them all in together in a rusty thing in the herb garden and didn't keep track of which were which. All the basil did well though. I didn't particularly notice any lime scent, but I wasn't sniffing for it either. I would try these again. |
||
Cinnamon Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Cinnamon') |
Prev Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist, rich soil, 12-16". Pinch tip from center shoot after 6 weeks to encourage bushy growth and pinch off blooms to keep from going to seed. I love the smell of this! Attracts bees and butterflies. Repels aphids, mites, & tomato hornworms.
Lettuce Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Crispum') |
Have Herb |
2023: 7 Healthy starts from seed. In the ground at last, looking a little scraggly for being in small pots for so long. They did fill out some, but were a bit sparse due to the late planting out.
Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Italian Large Leaf') |
Have Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, moist, fertile soil, 24-30", Pinch tip from center shoot after 6 weeks to encourage bushy growth and pinch off blooms to keep from going to seed. AKA: 'Italiano Classico' Genovese type basil, the best for cooking. 2023: I got 12 total from seed. Half were labeled 'Genovese' and half 'Italian Large Leaf'. They are the strongest looking of all my basil plants, which were imprisoned in small pots for way too long while I dug up the whole kitchen herb garden and tried to get it under control. 2022: Nice starts from Poorman Creek. I had a bunch of them and they did well. 2021: Several from seed. They did well. 2020: From seed. Got a bunch of healthy starts this year and they did well. |
||
Dark Opal Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens') |
Prev Herb Tender/Annuals |
FS-PS, Rich, moist soil, 18-24". Pinch tip from center shoot after 6 weeks to encourage bushy growth and pinch off blooms to keep from going to seed. Very dark purple leaves. 2021: Only got 1 of these from seed this year. Did fine. 2020: From seed - ended up with 2 plants, they did well in herb garden. |

Italian Parsley (Petroselinum crispum 'Italian Flat Leaf') |
Have Herb Tender/Annuals |
2022: Bought a couple starts from Poorman Creek. They got planted really late. 2021: Bought a nice healthy 4" pot at Fred Meyers in Spokane. I struggle to get parsley going from seed. |
||
Curly Parsley (Petroselinum crispum var. crispum) |
Have Herb Tender/Annuals |
2022: Bought starts again this year. I planted them really late, so we'll see. 2021: Bought 4" pot from Fred Meyer. I like the looks of these, but the flat leaf tastes better. I don't do that well with parsley for some reason, we'll see if they are still there in the spring. |
