By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 12:04 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Patio')

The Patio tomato was specifically designed to be grown in a pot. And that is what I did. I grew mine in a large pot. It set nice-looking, good-sized tomatoes that were about as bland and tasteless as could be. Not growing it again.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 10:10 AM, concerning plant: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Salad Bush')

Salad Bush cucumbers do exceptionally well in pots. All cucumbers are vines. Even the bush-variety vine. It is just that the vines on Salad Bush are very short and squat, so they only need a small trellis or you can let them grow over the edges of your pot. Makes excellent dark-green slicing cucumbers about 8 inches long.

Grew Palace King cucumbers last season. Seeds were easy to start but then all cucumber seeds are easily to start. Vigorous vines set too many male flowers.

I grew China Long last season. One of the many Asian varieties of cucumbers. Does much better trellised to keep the cucumbers growing straight. Even so I ended up with many oddly shaped cucumbers. They may have looked funny but the taste was good.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 9:29 AM, concerning plant: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus 'Marketmore 76')

The local nurseries around here usually sell the Marketmore 76 seedlings instead of the older Marketmore. Marketmore 76 has more disease resistance than the original so buy this improved variety if you can find it. I have grown both and the actual cucumbers both taste the same to me.

Marketmore is an old tried and true variety of slicing cucumber commonly grown in home gardens. I have grown it for years. Produces well, with nice looking cucumbers all summer long.

This plant amazed me with its neon color and large blooms! The sun was shining on the first ever bloom and I thought there was some kind of a red light in the garden. It is still blooming and only the lates are blooming now. Highly recommended.

I like the Benary's Giant mix and then I also grew my favorite colors from that mix separately. The seeds of Benary's Giant Deep Red are so easy to start and you end up with large, full, and stunning deep-red flowers. Another favorite color of the Benary's Series for me.

I have grown the Benary's Giant varieties of zinnias in big pots where these made a stunning display. Large, large full flowers come in a dazzling array of colors. Grow this mix and then choose your favorite colors and grow those individually.

This is another hotly colored flower in the Magellan series. The flowers of Magellan Orange are sure easy to see. Like the rest of the series, Magellan Orange is a shorter growing zinnia.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 12, 2013 5:37 PM, concerning plant: Zinnia 'Dahlia-Flowered Mix'

These are really beautiful Zinnnias that look like a very full pom pom or a Dahlia flower. Like all of the other zinnia series, these come in a wide range of pretty colors. I find that butterflies are not as attracted to the very full flowers of the Dahlia-Flowered Mix. They prefer the single-flowered types.

All zinnia flowers are beautiful, but these Cactus-Flowered plants are especially useful to attract both butterflies and goldfinches -- the butterflies for the flowers and the goldfinches for eating the flower seeds.
