Philistine Champion is one of more than 40 daylilies growing in my garden that were hybridized by northern hybridizer Phil Korth. A large flower that has so much garden presence. You just can't miss Philistine Champion blooming in the garden.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 4:06 PM, concerning plant: Double Late Tulip (Tulipa 'Uncle Tom')

Uncle Tom is a stunning bloom, so full that it looks like an old fashioned rose or a very fancy peony. To top it off, Uncle Tom has a rich and vibrant deep red-purple coloring. Simply a stunning tulip.

Little Man Tait blooms nicely but the flowers are really small. Good thing those flowers are pretty! A good garden plant. No muss, no fuss. And Little Man Tait increases nicely.

Green Rainbow has a smaller flower, but it packs a big punch. The coloring and pattern are so unusual. There is nothing else like it, at least not in my garden!

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 3:22 PM, concerning plant: Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Saratoga Springtime')

I can rely on Saratoga Springtime to put on a lovely show each spring. It is an early season bloomer, which I appreciate because it is difficult to find pretty daylily blooms for the start of the season. It's a no-fuss great garden plant that increases nicely.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 3:14 PM, concerning plant: Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Lava Flow')

Lava Flow is a poor bloomer in my garden. Each year it sends up scapes with 4 to 6 buds each. Never have I had more than 6, but it stays in my garden because of those stunning flowers.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 3:07 PM, concerning plant: Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Early Alibi')

Years ago I never used to like the open daylily flower forms, but my taste has changed. I find Early Alibi to be a nice flower, especially for the early bloom season, when it is often difficult to find colors other than plain yellows or golds.

Each year those first few blooms of Siloam Double Classic bloom as singles. After that it seems to get itself together and continues with the rest of the blooms as doubles, which they should be. Whether it's producing single or double blooms, Siloam Double Classic is a lovely daylily.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 11:49 AM, concerning plant: Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus)

I have been growing cucumbers in my Long Island garden for more years than I care to admit. I eat them in the summer when I have my own, but I do not care for supermarket cucumbers, so I never buy them. A favorite light lunch or snack is a nice bowl of cucumber and tomato salad.

There are so many varieties to choose from, but all cucumbers are vines. You can grow them sprawled on the ground or you can grow them vertically on supports.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 8, 2013 11:26 AM, concerning plant: Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum)

Nothing beats the taste of a home grown tomato fresh from your own vegetable patch. For this reason tomatoes are the number one vegetable grown by home gardeners. So many varieties to choose from. I grow my favorite cherry tomatoes, salad types and slicing tomatoes each year. My parents grew tomatoes when I was a child and I will always grow my own also.

By banker07 on Sep 8, 2013 8:49 AM, concerning plant: Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum x comollii (x albidum))

this is no cultivar but a natural form; so the cultivarname has to be deleted;

the correct name is S. x albidum or S. x comollii (x albidum);

in the past S. x albidum was seen as an own hybrid-form; later it was declared as a form of S. x comollii which is a natural hybrid of S. tectorum x S. wulfenii;

I have always loved the purple coloring on this daylily. A semi shady spot is best to bring out the true colors. Michael Bennett grows well, no problems.

I have always thought the blooms of Julie Newmar photograph better than they look in person. The plant does do well here, though. It's in my front yard garden, where everyone passing by can see it.
