By RoseBlush1 on Aug 4, 2013 7:41 PM, concerning plant: Rose (Rosa 'Gourmet Popcorn')

I planted 'Gourmet Popcorn' in the ground four years ago. I live in the mountains of northern California and have four distinct seasons, unlike southern California where, as a friend says, they have thirteen months of summer.

The database gives the size of the plant as "short 1 - 2 feet'. My plant is closer to 3.5 feet tall and just as wide. It is one of the larger shrub roses in that bed.

So, if conditions are right, plan to give the rose more space than indicated in the database when siting the rose.

Smiles,
Lyn

By cats1 on Aug 4, 2013 10:00 AM, concerning plant: Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Electric City Spring Fling')

I bought Spring Fling hoping for a white, pink, and yellow flower, and the first year it bloomed I almost wanted to throw it out of the yard. The base color isn't really white, and the pink is more of a rose. The edge didn't amount to much and the flowers just looked plain to me... especially since I wanted teeth and ruffles. Ok... I just decided to pay more attention to my other plants and let this one do whatever it wanted to do. This is the second year it's bloomed for me though, and I was surprised that I actually like it more this year. The edges are a little larger and more developed, and although the colors still aren't exactly pink and white, I've decided I like it enough overall to have it in the yard and enjoy it.

Now for the weird pic of it I posted. Believe me, if they all looked like that I would have loved it from the start... and I'm going to watch it and hope for more, but more than likely it's a fluke. --If I find out different, I will post it! :)

This agastache is easily started from seed and blooms the first year. Mine got about 4' high but we had an unusually large amount of rain this year.

By Joy on Aug 2, 2013 3:16 PM, concerning plant: Blue Passion Flower (Passiflora caerulea)

In a mild winter, which has been common here of late, Passiflora caerulea is evergreen. It will die to the ground in a cold winter and is late to come up in the spring. Can be invasive. Will send up new shoots at a fair distance from the original plant.

A 1994 release from the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. It is a deep rose skinned potato with deep orange flesh. Growth pattern and production similar to Beauregard.

A 1990 introduction from the University of Arkansas. Earlier and darker green than Clemson Spineless. Holds quality a bit longer. Semi dwarf branching plant slightly smaller than Clemson Spineless. Productive but I still prefer Emerald.

This is a very beautiful, tiny little arachnoideum type.
It provides useful contrast in form and shape in a pot with other Sempervivum.
Such an elegant little plant.

The best green to orange bell that I have grown. Blocky shape and colors up faster than most.

They grow ok here and are reasonably hot. Not much taste otherwise. Interesting novelty but not very useful.

These marble-sized green to red peppers are very productive here. They are medium hot. My pepper-loving friends eat them like cherry tomatoes.

A 5 x 4 inch mildly hot bell pepper. A green to red bell with less than 1000 scoville units. Productive but of limited use to me.

By farmerdill on Aug 1, 2013 1:54 PM, concerning plant: Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Blushing Beauty')

A very pretty white to red bell pepper. Unfortunately, it is too finicky to do well here. Fruits are attacked by a myriad of critters and diseases. "F1 hybrid. Characteristics: bell pepper, fruit "blushes" from light yellow or ivory to red at maturity, thick walled and sweet at any stage in their development, harvesting begins 72 days after transplanting, 450 mm tall with bushy plant habit, 400 mm wide plant, good for patio containers. All-American Selection. Resistance: bacterial leaf spot races 1, 2 and 3, and tobacco mosaic virus. All-American Selections announcement, Nov. 1998."

By Skiekitty on Aug 1, 2013 12:08 PM, concerning plant: Rose (Rosa 'Summer Sunshine')

This was my first yellow rose I bought back in '09 from Home Depot. I had to move it once as I had it on the west side of the house where it got very little sun to the east side, where it's in full sun. The soil it's in is incredibly poor -- nasty and sandy. This rose has got to be the hardiest rose on the planet. Not only did it survive the move, but it survives in the bad soil, being 100% neglected (forgot to water it one summer until I saw it bloom, then remembered I put a rose there), buried in weeds, no winter protection at ALL for my zone 5... and it just keeps coming back & blooming every year! Not too good as far as vase-life, though, and doesn't have the strongest scent. But a real trouper!
