Invincible is not one of the flashiest plants, which are the ones I am often drawn to. It is, however, a very attractive plant. It forms a nice clump with attractive glossy green foliage. It is a good addition to a planting of the more flamboyant variegated Hostas. I have it growing in 2 different places and I am always pleased with it. It is nice also when it blooms.

This is the first of my Hostas to leaf out in the spring. It's seldom bothered by snails or slugs.

With proper growing conditions, this is a Giant Hosta, reaching nearly 6 feet in diameter. Blue Angel makes a very large neat mound with the leaves pointing downward. It will grow in part sun, but keeps its blue color longer in full shade.

This is a beautiful variegated hosta that has done exceptionally well here. The gold leaf margins are especially large. It is hardy and fast-growing. The variegated heart-shaped leaves show very well in shade, but it also tolerates some sun. Lavender flowers on 30" scapes in mid-summer.
  • By virginiarose (Virginia - Zone 8a) on Apr 3, 2014 8:39 AM concerning plant: Hosta 'Golden Tiara'
This hosta is a rapid grower, makes a great edger plant, and also looks great as a mass planting.
  • By diggit (southeast Indiana - Zone 6a) on Dec 8, 2013 11:27 AM concerning plant: Hosta (Hosta sieboldiana 'Golden Meadows')
It doesn't always get mentioned that some hostas, such as 'Golden Meadows,' don't keep their colors for the whole season. Another that comes to mind is 'War Paint,' which goes all green sooner than 'Golden Meadows.' Either way, they are both very striking. 'Golden Meadows' in particular has a tremendous contrast of blue green with a bright cream center when fresh in the early spring that is hard to beat, but for those purchasing it for the first time, just be aware that it changes to an all dark bluish green by mid summer.

This hosta looked good in the spring when it first came up, but within one month it was very ugly. This hosta does not do well in zone 8a. It does not tolerate heat very well, and I got rid of all four of mine.

Too big for my taste. I'd love to sell it but last time I tried to take a chunk from it I had to use a saw and it took a long time.

  • By ViolaAnn (Ottawa, ON Canada - Zone 5a) on Aug 14, 2013 2:50 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Whirlwind'
'Whirlwind' is one of my earliest hostas and I've had it for more than a decade. I recently came to the conclusion that my hostas planted near my Linden tree did not grow as quickly or as well as those that were farther from it. It may be a lack of moisture or simply the dense shade. At any rate, about 3 years ago, I divided my slow-growing 'Whirlwind' and placed a much smaller division in an area that receives morning sun (but not a lot more moisture). That division has grown rapidly and blooms far better than the original division, making me conclude that this plant grows better with some sun.

I've had this plant for several years and it has grown well. However, it always looks to me as though it's wilted while I know it's not. If that's not the look you want in your garden, this might not be the right plant for you.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jul 1, 2013 5:33 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Broad Band 1'
Hosta Broad Band is an unregistered cultivar from Ron Livingston. It is a hybrid of the streaker 'Splish Splash' and emerges in the spring with a blue-green leaf margined light yellow, which fades to near-white. It makes a very tidy medium-sized clump. A quality plant I was glad to add to my garden.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jun 27, 2013 12:03 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Tropical Storm'
Introduced in 2007 by Amy Bergeron, Tropical Storm is a sport of award-winning Rainforest Sunrise, which in turn is a sport of Maui Buttercup, which in turn is a hybrid of August Moon X Francis Williams. It has heart-shaped leaves of good substance which are a rich green, broadly banded with a contrasting yellow border. Slug resistant. A good grower. Medium small.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jun 24, 2013 6:25 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Curly Fries'
Hosta Curly Fries is an exciting new small Hosta which features long, narrow, heavily ruffled, and stiffly but gracefully held leaves. The leaves emerge a chartreuse green and age to yellow as the summer progresses. The plant has a spidery look. It is a unique and desirable Hosta. Deep purple scapes are topped with lavender flowers. Great in containers or in the ground. Introduced by Soldberg in 2008, it is a seedling of Pineapple Upside Down Cake X ? I love this one.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jun 24, 2013 5:42 PM concerning plant: Hosta Shadowland® Wheee!
Hosta Wheee was found by Bill Meyer at a garden center without a label. He recognized it as something special and introduced it in 2011. It may be a sport of Hosta Leola Fraim. It has wonderfully ruffled leaves, which are green with cream-colored margins. The leaves are ruffled even in the juvenile stage and have good slug resistance. The medium-sized plants, when mature, are topped with light lavender blooms on purple scapes. This is one of those hostas you will recognize after you have seen it once. A choice hosta with a good growth rate. The form provides good contrast with the form of other hostas in the garden.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jun 24, 2013 5:01 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Blue Ivory'
Blue Ivory is a spectacular sport of the popular all-blue Hosta Halcyon. It was found by Meyer, who introduced it in 2007. It has spear-shaped leaves of good substance that are a rich blue in color and banded with a wide border of creamy white. It is a relatively slow grower, which is probably due to the amount of white. I have read that it enjoys a little extra water. Flower stems on this one aren't particularly attractive. Slug resistant. A slow grower but a small plant. It's a nice addition to the garden.
  • By Paul2032 ( Utah - Zone 5b) on Jun 23, 2013 6:37 AM concerning plant: Hosta 'Ginsu Knife'
Introduced in 2002 by Bob Solberg, Ginsu Knife produces an arching mound of long wavy serrated leaves, which are green and are bordered by a variable edge of creamy white. This is a unique and easily recognized plant. Tall scapes with fragrant flowers in late summer. It is a hybrid of 'Iron Gate Supreme' X 'Green Fountain' A good grower and an award winner. A very nice Hosta in my estimation.
  • By lovemyhouse (Garland, TX (NE Dallas suburb) - Zone 8a) on Jun 3, 2013 7:48 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Patriot'
Tough as nails. Was in a much smaller container for the last four years and survived two years of bad drought without a flinch. (Well, maybe a brown leaf or two, but no flinching!)
  • By Tepelus (Nashville, Michigan - Zone 6a) on May 25, 2013 8:07 PM concerning plant: Hosta 'Mouse Tracks'
I probably just have a dud of a plant, but mine does not streak well and often puts out all blue eyes.
