These are my Adenium ko seedlings. I had a different approach this time. I took them out of the propagator as soon as most of them did germinate after 5 days. Than I did place them in the window sill above the heating. They are looking much better now. Not to stretched anymore. Most of them did germinate. From 1 type even 14 out of 15 now. Even got a twin Adenium. I guess that that Will not have much chance though. The twin is in the bottom corner. Difficult to see.

Willeke, are you germinating seeds in 100% coarse or extra-coarse perlite?

No Ken. It is just special soal for sowing, but I did put that on top to keep the fungus gnats away. To prevent them from hatching in the soil.

Interesting. Fungus gnats are more common when growing indoors?

I think so. Certainly When it is warm and humid. Although the soil is not that moist. It is warm above the heating.

In my experience, ALL insect pests and mold spores are more common when growing inside.

IT seems that way. In summer my plants where in my greenhouse. No fungus gnats than. Terrible creatures.

Mine are all outside spring and summer. I guess because of wind, rain, heat, and natural predators, being outside has its advantages. During the fall and winter months, I run multiple fans in my greenhouses and in my solarium and this air movement seems to certainly help keep down the insect population.

Not possible to grow them outside now here in Holland in winter. Just to cold. No heating in the greenhouse yet. So I have to do with my living room. At least this does keep them away.

I agree about ventilating and air movement; also about allowing the surface of soil to be on the dry side and using perlite for top layer. This helps a great deal with controlling gnats...they are attracted to moisture and decaying stuff.

Perhaps I better ventilate the room more now and than. Although not to much. Otherwise it Will get to cold now in winter. It is more easy to stick yo Perlite now. Hilarious!

Well, you're really only circulating room temperature air...not making it any colder.

Well it Will get colder When I let fresh air in from outside. I do not have a fan. Rolling my eyes.

Oh, okay, "ventilate," letting fresh air in. Sorry, Willeke, I misunderstood. <slap hand on forehead>

Willeke, all your indoor plants will do better with some air-movement. In my opinion, it really won't help much to simply open a window unless there happens to be a good breeze blowing through that window. You should easily be able to find a very small, very inexpensive fan either at a department store or online. My experiences, growing tropical plants in greenhouses and now in a solarium, clearly demonstrate the importance of air-movement. I am absolutely convinced that my extensive use of fans pretty much eliminates insect and disease problems. Depending on the time of year, I have anywhere from 800 to 1000 tropical plants to care for.

I must say I am not convinced about that Ken. I have a lot of houseplants. Even some orchids. They all do fine. The orchids are blooming all year long. I give them some tlc, organic fertilizer and some seaweed fertilizer now and than. Also ofcourse fresh medium When they need it, and i ventilate the room every day.

You don't live in Mississippi, a deep south state. We have every bug imaginable and with our heat and constant humidity, we probably have every mold spore as well. Perhaps that's the difference, Willeke. Whatever you are doing, it appears to be the right thing. I did not mean to indicate anything else. I apologize if I came across wrong.

It is ok Ken. I know you ment well. I guess it sure is different in every country or even state. Although nowadays with this soft winters we seem to have it might change fast. So who knows I might also need a fan soon. Thank You!
