Hello,

I got this succulent as a present in June 2018 and I would be grateful if someone could answer my questions about it.

First, I don't know what type of succulent is it and whether it actually is a succulent. Any ideas (see pictures)? The leaves are about 20 cm long and about 7 cm broad at the broadest point.

There seem to be some problem with plant, the leaves are consequently getting brown and they seem to be dying. One leave already got completely brown and fell. The stem is also brown.

I wonder what can I do to save it? how often and how much shall I water it? Does it need to be near window? What is the best temperature for it? I usually switch of the heater for night and during the day when I am at work, but I don't think that the temperature gets below about 18C.
I have been watering it a little bit about every four days. When I noticed that it has been getting brown, I started to water it every other day during the last two weeks, but it doesn't seem to help.

Also there appeared to be a little bit of mould on the soil, so I removed the top layer of soil with the mould. Is it possible that I need to buy a new soil and put it into a new pot?

I guess I should at least add some soil, but I am not sure which type of soil would be the best?

Many thanks

And reading your reply, too much watering.
They are kept here, in an airy bark soil, well lit window along with succulents, but the watering is heftier(slightly more in quantity and frequency), and like it sunny autumn -spring. Not kept in high heat in summer.

Welcome!

Yes, it is a Phalaenopsis orchid. You are overwatering - it should be watered only when you can't feel any moisture in the bark. It should be planted in chunky bark, not soil. Place it so the plant receives bright light but no direct sun. If the window is bright enough to make succulents happy, it is way too much light for a Phalaenopsis. Your temperatures should be fine.

The orchid forum does have care instructions at the top of their page. The "stickeys" at the top of the page will be very helpful to you.

PS: Ignore what Stefan says about orchid care. He grows cactus, not orchids. Hilarious!

Get it out of the decorative pot. I'll bet that it does not have drainage holes and could be the reason that your orchid is staying too wet.
Orchid roots drown under those conditions. Get it repotted into fresh orchid media, NOT SOIL as everyone else has said.
Read all of our forms regarding Phalaenopsis, it will recover.

Actually i sorta do assist/part time care in growing orchids. And i also grow tropicals(but not that much). If its too much light , why are both blooming right now(one even multi branch bloom)?Post photos later? I'm all ears!
