I have an Anne Bishop ginger, I was remiss this winter in keeping the plant moist (zone4b), this spring it looked like a goner, but it has put out a leaf and I see another growing point on the rhizomes, is there a preferred or the best method to divide a ginger plant since the pot is getting deformed. Thx

When I want to divide mine, I take a serrated knife and cut between the stalks. If your plant is in a black nursery pot, just sacrifice the pot! Cut it down the sides and get the plant out. Then you can better see any new growth before you start cutting and maybe sever some new growth

Wouldn't hurt to wash the soil off the roots so you can see more clearly where you are cutting. It is hard to kill a ginger though, as long as there are "eyes" on each piece you should be fine.

I buy serrated bread knives in the dollar store and always have one or two around for plant amputations.

Yes totally true. I have dug gingers up to divide them, cut up pieces and just tossed them into the edge of the woods (didn;t even plant them) and they rooted and grow huge every year, because its boggy out there and they love water. They get 7-8 feet. We are talking Hedychiums here, not ALL gingers

True, not all but Costus, Curcumas and Alpinas divided well for me also.

I had cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, in SC and it multiplied like crazy but it never bloomed for me. The leaves, when crushed, smelled fabulous though.

The tumeric had great foliage, but no blooms.

So glad I am not the only one. I always wondered if I had missed the flowers somehow.
