Can anyone identify what type of Phalaenopsis this is? The more I look the more confused I get. I can't seem to find a picture that is an exact match for what I have. Does it fall under picotee? Any info anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome!

Unfortunately, there are so many different Phalaenopsis cultivars now that it may be almost impossible to identify your plant with any certainty. The unusual patterning should narrow the options somewhat, but it's still going to be difficult to identify.

Do you have a tag with the plant that includes any other information, such as a nursery product number that you may be able to look up online?

Unfortunately no. D'Oh! I really wish more places would make it available to the buyer. My husband bought it for me and if I ever want to purchase another, I have no idea what to call it to even begin looking for it. I was hoping someone might have the same one and know what it's called.

That's the whole point Flame. We could flower a hundred Phalaenopsis from the same seed pod and no 2 would look exactly alike. There would be some that would look similar to yours, some that would be close but have less markings, some with lighter shaded markings. There is a less then one percent chance of matching it exactly. And if you are looking for a name, would you settle for a name " that is pretty close?"

The only chance you might have is if this was a mericlone. Clones would look alike because they were all "cloned from the same plant!"
I right now could probably find 5 hybrids like yours and put them in a "police line up" and although they might look very similar, No two would look exactly alike.

I will research a few possibilities. I'll try and get a few names for you later today.
For me today it is an appointment for planning my new kitchen remodel and a root canal but rest assured I will give it a shot. As an AOS Judge, I have access to a little more material then others.

Flame, while having my second cup of coffee, I came across this image. This shows exactly why what seems like an easy question, "What is the name of this orchid?", can be impossible to answer!!!

This image was taken right out of a magazine featuring AOS awards. It is Phalaenopsis Taiwan Red Cat 'Greer'. You see flowers similar to yours on the left and solid pink flowers on the right. What is both troublesome and amazing is, THOSE ARE ON THE SAME SPIKE!!! Yes, the same spike, no photoshop, no image trickery, the same spike.
You would think that on a spike, the flowers would be the same. Obviously, that is not the case. I have no idea if it blooms like this every time or not but this is incredible. It just shows you what kind of crazy stuff can happen with the genes controlling flowers.

@EgyptsFlame This type of Phal would be considered a "Harlequin". You might wish to read this article :)

Thank you that was a very interesting read! I didn't know the colors and markings could change with temperature.

That is NOT a harlequin by AOS description. Harlequin refers to random blotchy patches of tissue on the sepals and petals.
Those are markings similar to veins or veination. There is no extra tissue involved.

No no no. We are all friends here!
There is no correcting or anything else going on buddy. It is all about orchid education.
If I could teleport you to a place where you could experience a harlequin, they are often mishapened blooms because of the extra tissue. This extra tissue would remind you a little of corduroy or quilting.
In terms of this flower, there is no extra tissue. It is just markings like stripes or spots.
Please please please Glenn, no bad intentions on my part. If you were at all offended or annoyed with me I sincerely apologize.

The best I can come up in terms of an identification for your plant is Phalaenopsis Taiwan Red Cat. There are several awards to this hybrid and they vary a great deal in terms of markings or stripes and intensity of color.

Thanks Bill, good to know about clone/mericlone. Thanks for asking Lindsey, I have often wondered the same.
