Will, thanks for sharing that wonderful article ... I totally agree, even tending a single indoor plant can change ones perspective on life! I love the idea of "Sow the City" and I've heard of some larger cities having community gardens but in the winter time when one can't really grow outdoors, they could enjoy tending a couple of "houseplants."

My motto for a long time has been "Playing in the dirt is my therapy", whether it's on my hands and knees digging in the garden outdoors, or tending to a few plants inside my home. It truly does make a difference in ones mood!

Just watching all the butterflies, wasps, dragonflies, moths, lizards, and bees is free entertainment. It is relaxing plus it's like you created this environment that is bringing all this life together.

I went through a major rough patch earlier in the year. My plants have been a HUGE part of recovering. Smiling

My indoor plant collection was relatively small compared to what it is now, earlier in the year. I expanded it quite a bit over the months. They keep me really busy with all the upkeep, but it's worked wonders in improving my mood, keeping me distracted, keeping me occupied, etc.

Growing has certainly become my focus since having to stay home. I leave only for grocery curbside each Saturday and on rare occasions slip into Walmart to pay for bagged gardening stuff I can load myself outside. Being a natural recluse, it's not really much of a burden.

But my old exercise, walking in the pool is unavailable with the activity center closed, and it's too hot to do much else. So I've begun projects in containers, raised beds and multiple hydroponic operations, and it all occupies me pretty much completely, what with doing, researching and planning. Gardening has kept me from being completely idle.

And a lot of the period was enriched my our purple martin colonies with about 48 houses and this year around 100 young born here. They all just left a few days ago to their mass regional roosts before leaving for Mexico. So I always have the task of cleaning out their nests for next year.

I agree.

My house plants create a nice calming relaxing atmosphere, many people over here are buying more and more house plants now than ever before probably because they think it keeps Covid 19 away... Thinking sales of house plants have risen since the pandemic. Plants are very good for mental health.

I know this is an older post but I completely see the appeal of plants for mental hygiene/ reducing anxiety & depression, it's actually the reason I started gardening.

I am a very anxious person and get easily stressed, gardening is a way for me to keep my head at bay.

When I was taking summer classes, whenever I was stressed after working on assignments or being in class all day, I would go out and maintain my parents roses. It was so rewarding because after a bit of maintaining they would begin to have bigger and more blooms!

Sometimes just taking that time to go outside and looks at my plants for a bit allows me to step out of my fears and worries and life for a bit (:
