Daylilies Region: Michigan Orchids Roses
Last fall I ordered a batch of seedlings from Gilbert Wild's nursery. There were advertised as being from Brian Mathieu's hybridizing.
Some of them are blooming now; so far about half look like a refined H. fulva, but others have some interest. Anyway, to keep them straight in my garden notes, currently I am calling them by a number, in order of their first bloom showing. Long term wise, I'd like to give them a name, other than Mathieu's #4, #5, etc. Any ideas of how to best go about this -- I want to make sure that I do so in a responsible way, honoring their hybridizer.

Welcome! Do you mean you are thinking of registering them with the American Hemerocallis Society? If not, and you do decide to give them some kind of "garden name", please don't pass any on to anyone else with that name otherwise it could get confused with a registered cultivar with the same name.

Welcome Sunny.....we love new members. A problem with naming them and sharing them is that in a few years some one will post a picture asking for help with the ID. Confusing......Stay enthused.....Enjoy the journey.....We always love pictures. Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

NOID stands for no ID, and just means you have a daylily that is probably registered with the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society but you've lost the label and forgot what it is, or it came to you with the wrong label and you realized that when the flower was wrong, or it came to you with no label.

Hi SunnyinMichigan, I would love to see pictures of those seedlings that you find interesting. I think it is commendable that you want to keep the hybridizer's name with the seedlings. Maybe someone can help out with Brian's last name, but I think it is spelled Mahieu (without the 't').

If you want to name them something other than Mahieu #1, 2, etc., you could definitely do that. Garden names are a nice idea, and do sound better than 1, 2, etc! But as Sue mentioned, if you do decide to share them, just make sure the receiver knows that it is just a garden name and has not been registered.

I have several daylilies that I received in a trade with neighbors about 15 years ago. One of the neighbors told me that some of the daylilies were from a teacher who used daylilies to show his class how to hybridize. One of those seedlings still grows in my garden and has never been named, but I just love it because it is tall, large, red, and blooms later than most of my daylilies.
