Yesterday I was surfing daylily websites and came across this one in Ted Petit's Spring 2013 collection:

http://www.petitdaylilies.com/...

WOW! I don't remember seeing complex patterned daylilies with such fancy edges before. I guess people might consider it gaudy -- but for me gaudy is good -- great, in fact! I love it! I do have one of its parents coming in the spring, RUFFLES HAVE RIPPLES, but that's as close as I'm afraid I'll get. And anyway, my personal favorite is another in his collection, INTRICATE BY DESIGN. But unfortunately I've already gone WAY over my limit! nodding

Ann and I were looking at Cobalt Rings, but decided that it couldn't possibly be that blue. After being stung way too many times with blue flower pictures, I decided that it was too much of a risk to spend that much money.

Isn't that the truth? But here's the picture that sold me on its parent, RUFFLES HAVE RIPPLES:

After I saw this picture from Guidry's I was sold, even though it's really a far cry from blue. But then you know I have a fondness for teeth...

By the way, what is a "Butterfly" daylily? Is it a certain type of pattern or something?

The first reference I have for the term "butterfly" is in the Floyd Cove 2005 catalog. Pat used butterfly to describe a new series of daylilies he was working on, he also had the "Candy" series. The Butterfly series were to be intricately patterned daylilies with high bud counts, branching and with a size in the same range as his "Candy" series. The first 5 in the series were Fractal, Metallic Butterfly, Optical Art, Quantum Singularity and Tholian Web. There is no official definition for "butterfly", just as there is no definition for "candy" and the use of the term seems to have spread to other hybridizers when describing their pattern daylilies and size, budcount and branching don't seem to be a factor, nor what type of pattern. I have seen it used in decribing several different variations of patterning and believe it to now be a general marketing/descriptive type term for any daylily with a pattern rather than for a specific type of pattern. Even the original 5 butterflies were different in their pattern expressions which would make it difficult to define as applying to only one specific pattern.
Personally I like it when used in general reference to patterns, they do look like beautiful multicolored butterfies in the garden.

Beautiful multicolored butterflies in the garden. Just love that description, Char.

Patterned daylilies don't perform very well here. They seldom form a complete
pattern. It's rather like having an apple tree that won't set fruit except for
maybe one out of five years. Of course, I don't have any of the newer
patterned ones. They may be better, but I'm cautious about buying any
due to the performance of older cultivars.

I love the "Butterflies" that I have bought, mostly from Pat Stamile. But they have not been very fertile for me. My favorite out of this group is Rings of Wonder, also Blue Beat is a close second.
