Thread OP

I have this rose bush which was already established when I moved into my home. I've been training it along the fence. I have never known a rose bush grow so fast, during the summer it shoots new stems meters into the air, at the end of the season I pull them down and attach them to my fence. It would be great to know the name of it so I could buy another.

Does it bloom more than once? What about fragrance and thorns? Do you prune it and if so, when? Knowing if it's a once-bloomer or not would help narrow things down. Closer pictures of its leaves would also help. It looks similar to Bobby James or one of the Lens' Hybrid Musks off-hand. Beautiful Ros. Also, Where do you garden?

Why don't you try and root some cuttings if you want more plants? It isn't that difficult and you can get as many as you need to fill your fence.

Ha, Seil! That was the obvious solution! Smiling

Thanks everyone for the replies! @vaporvac Here is a close up of the leaves and thorns, it is winter at the moment, I'm in Nottingham, England.

I don't prune it, I don't do anything to it, except move the long shoots from upwards (over the summer each shoot will grow about 6-8 meters upwards) and I attach them to the fence.

It blooms once a year, around June time.

I would be keen to try the cuttings idea, any tips? can I pot some cuttings up this time of year?

My main reason for wanting time know about the plant is because I may move house in the future and want to be able to have such an amazing plant at the new property, but don't want to risk killing the plant trying to move it. So I'll try some potted cuttings. It would be great to know what it is though, I've never seen a rose bush grow like this before!

by its size and leaves it reminds me of the rambler 'Astra Desmond'
See: https://www.helpmefind.com/ros...
Perhaps its just a wishful expectation! I'm after this rambler from my 89 year old nursery lady who was unable to ship roses due to lockdowns...(like everywhere else....). Perhaps I may be lucky this season... Crossing Fingers! in spite of lockdowns coming and going!

Thanks @hampartsum that does look like it! Although perhaps mine is less bush like. Are some plants just more vigorous because my plant is huge. Please ignore how it looks at the moment, we had the fence replaced this week and had to remove the wire mesh from the old panels which the rose is attached to, we need to reattach it to the new fence. But as you can see from the images it goes all the way to the greenhouse, once the stems get there I attach them coming back, so in Summer when it's in bloom it's just beautiful.

Just read descriptions of it and Astra Desmond easily fits with the size your rambler has reached. Some people just train them horizontally so one ought to measure in that direction rather than vertical height. Anyway, it would be useful to find others in your region who might be growing AD and compare. Is there a local rose society from whom to ask?

There are MANY ways to start cuttings! I usually take my cuttings immediately after the rose finishes blooming. You can stick them in pots or right in the ground. Do a search for cuttings on here and you will find lots of information. Some people even start new plants by just pinning the long canes to the soil and letting them root!
