All kinds of native shrubs and trees. They are browsers and we have very mild winters here.
Our lawn is still growing.

We have had them nibble the tops out of our young tomatoes plants in the spring. Makes the grow nice and bushy. One time through, and they never come back for more. Wonder if it upsets their deer tummies?

I saw evidence they have digestive problems when eating tomatoes.I was on an early morn strole and cam across huge messy piles and was peeeoed to think the neighbors just let their dog run at night.
It was deer and I noticed the tops of toms and middle of poile beans were gone.

This winter I added cayenne powder to birdseed I tossed on the porch.Deer had been coming to eat and tramping on the lilies. Either my pepper was old and weak and didnt even bother squirrils or it isnt the deterrent people say it is because there was a pale red area where deer had relieved themselves nearby.

I'm sure that is why they just taste the tomato plants. And it's probably just the younger deer that hadn't tried it before. They are pretty good at not giving another try to something that made them sick.

When I was a teenager we lived in the southern mountains of NM and we had tons of deer. Tons & tons. They'd ravage our garden every year.. first would be the jalapenos, then the tomatoes, then the broccoli & cauliflower, the pole beans & string beans, then the corn when the ears were being developed. The cucumbers wouldn't even make it barely above the ground and the damned deer would wait until the watermelon were almost ripe before they'd puncture them w/their hooves & devoured. How many times I would want to have Bambi burgers for dinner the next day when I went outside to see what was left.. and there was never anything left! Wait.. they didn't eat the tomatillos.. odd. But they'd eat everything else.

I put in a lot of salvia & agastache last year (2012), so I'm hoping that everything comes back OK this year! I'd love to have some of that black & blue salvia, but every plant I put in didn't make it and the 2 packets of seed didn't grow. Sad

I would have to name them all Bill. Glare
That is a lot of deer and deer destruction. Yep, name them all Bill.

Have any of you seen this salvia in person?
Royal Bumble, I see Annies Annuals has it.

I like to see the entire plant in a garden setting. I want to know what the foliage and stems look like in contrast to the bloom.

Thanks for the link, Kermit. Good idea to camouflage deer "favorites" among plants with lesser appeal to them. Smiling

Fortunately, we don't have a problem with deer here, although our neighbor just across the street has them coming in often causing problems for them. But, then, we have three big dogs and a wolf in the kennel in the middle of my garden. Green Grin! When we lived in OR, tho, the darn things would jump the garden fence just as the tomatoes were getting ripe and I swear they took just one bite out of every tomato. I think they kept hoping one of them would be an apple?

I really like that "Dancing Flames." The foliage is lovely! Anyone know a source and if you can grow it from seed?
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

I have some salvias.. picked up quite a few last year at Lowes in their clearance racks.. love clearance racks! But they all looked the same and had 2 different tags, so not sure exactly what they are.. either
they're Sensation Blue or Blue Hill. I also have May Night, Sensation Rose, & Victoria White.

I *know* that this is Purple Rain.
