Evan, try to keep your list all to one post otherwise I'll have to combine all your posts together and things might get lost. I tip my hat to you.

Would the script extend to the cultivars of these species? If so, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis probably should be taken off the list. I think the species hibiscus might have some salt tolerance, but most of the cultivars of that species are not salt tolerant. It would be easier to add the salt-tolerance data to a few types of Hibiscus by hand than to remove it from thousands of entries.

Thanks, Lin. Smiling

Evan, those also should be removed from the list unless we're going to have degrees of salt tolerance. Both of those species have low or slight tolerance. They will survive some salt spray, but they probably won't survive a load of salt dumped for snow control. The only genuinely salt-tolerant Hibiscus is H. grandiflorus, and I've already marked that one salt tolerant.

This raises the issue of what does salt tolerant mean. The plants listed are mostly aggie extensions/Universites and they break things down into three catagories. Something comparable to High, Moderate, and Slight salt tolerance. It sounds like those Hibiscus would do well for folks living near the coast while other shrubs wouldn't. Not subjected to inundation with salt water or lots of spray of course.

Why not just add a drop down button for three categories?

Check out this sites very thorough discussion of salt tolerance.

Evan, I like the drop down idea. We could go through the list of plants once Dave has finished adding the salt tolerant info and do the added info?

Maybe Dave could make it in alphabetical sections for us, so we can easily work a little at a time on them?

If Dave can do it, wouldn't it be easier for us to modify what we've done and then have him add the info. into the 3 different categories?

I too like the idea of a drop down box where we can have additional information!

I was thinking of deleting the list I provided above because I didn't specify Salt Tolerant, Moderately Salt Tolerant or Slightly Salt Tolerant ... but if we can add this information later that would be great.

I agree
It would be easy to do if Dave created an area for us that would keep the list updated, showing the ones that still needed updating for the drop down info. Thumbs up

With all of us working on it, it wouldn't take much time at all to complete the task.
