Lin, It would mean editing what I have as well but I think it would be worth the effort.

Some of the sites don't give differing degrees of salt tolerance so here's another possibility. We post our lists using;

Salt Tolerant
Moderately Salt Tolerant
Slightly Salt Tolerant

Maybe not including plants which are salt sensitive.

Add a fourth category
Unknown salt tolerance

Dave adds these to the DB leaving Unknown salt tolerance out. We can then run through this list and handle them singly or we could ask Dave to run a report Angel which eliminates entries which made it into the DB.

I'm just thinking about when you created the duplicate list for us to refer to, on plants that needed attention. Wondering if something like that could be done for plants that need info on degree of salt tolerance.
So if all these plants are added to the database as salt tolerant, we could then go to each one and mark just how tolerant that plant is. As soon as that info is added that plant would disappear from the working list of drought tolerant plants.

Did I make sense? I am not the best at putting my ideas on paper. *Blush*

I'm confused. How do the plants get added to the DB? How do we change their status?

Hurray!
Dave adds them, then creates a list for us to amend the information, with the drop down for further clarification.
When the plant info is amended it will no longer show in the list.
Kind of like the duplicate list he did for us.

By the way, I can't find the link to the duplicate list?

Could you point me to something in the DB that this would look like edit added the DB entry not the report.)? Would we have a check box for Salt Tolerant which opens a write in box?

I've revised my list back into the three categories so however we do it the reference is here.

I found this on EC Electrical Conductivity.
dS/m = mmhos/cm = mS/cm (Soil EC)

That is my understanding of what has been requested. I'm open to other ways, of course.

I think this is a good solution. If we all have lists with degrees of salt tolerance there are bound to be contradictions from our various sources.

With a write box should we attempt to standardize or suggest what is written?
If so, can the check box have a scroll over listing the suggested degrees?

To address Zuzu's concerns;
When a species is listed can that data-point be shown in the species entry only, not in cultivars?
When a Genus is listed do we add the data-point to all species (no cvs.) within the genus?

What else??

Certainly.

I think yes to all. The best solution, I think, is to not change any parent plants at all. That will protect any inadvertent mass changes down the line.

But if any genus alone is listed, then all plants in that genus will be updated.

Thumbs up Thumbs up

Between us we've found references with several different breakdowns.

Doe we want to go limit it to 3 or 4 or more?

Or we have the main data-point Salt tolerant and we only fill in the write box for lesser degrees of tolerance?

That was my understanding of what you wanted but we can do it however you like. I do think the write-in box is the most flexible option.

How about this:

Main datapoint
Salt Tolerant

Suggested write in (scrollover)
Moderately high salt tolerance
Moderate salt tolerance
Slight salt tolerance

Another option is we can simply make a pulldown where you can choose one of those options.
