I just read a post made by someone on one of the peony groups on FB asking about using alfalfa meal on peonies for fertilizer. I posted that I didn't think it'd be a good thing since it was mainly nitrogen, she posted this after:

After I saw her post I googled using alfalfa meal as a peony fertilizer and got this about roses:

It's an advertisement on a website but still, sounds interesting. Has anyone used it on blooming perennials, especially peonies or roses? How did it perform?

I had used alfalfa pellets on roses but not on peonies. I am not sure of its effect on peonies but I think like you. Having too much nitrogen even if it's slow release is not good for peonies. I am sure if alfalfa is good for peonies, we would have already heard from other sources such as the commercial growers, APS, and other peony organizations. There are so many other good alternatives for peony fertilizers, I would only use alfalfa as a last resort.

Cricket Hill lists using Alfalfa meal in their peony planting site selection and preparation page.

But they also list using Bloodmeal, Which I read was high in Nitrogen.

I wondered if all listed in the guide should be used, (possibly also mycorrhizae) but not knowing enough about everyone of them, and the total cost, in the end I just used Bonemeal, Azomite, compost.
I tend to be cautious by nature.
I even only used a bare sprinkling of lime afraid to burn roots, until emailing Nate, he said it was hard to use too much lime, so now I have used quite alot, but of limestone sand, instead of powdered which should break down slower.

Interesting about Triacontanol though.

I bought some alfalfa pellets and made alfalfa tea a couple of years ago. I think I just used it on perennials.

I will make some this year and try it on a few peonies.

So many experiments, so little peonies to try them on here in CO now! I will definitely try some on perennials. The claims that it triggers root growth is interesting.

When I was seriously in to daylilies about 20 years ago, alfalfa tea was THE fertilizer for hems so I don't see why it wouldn't be good for peonies too. Although I still have the pellets (don't ask) I never got round to making the tea (supposed to be very smelly) mostly because I don't use any fertilizer on any of my plants so no reason to start Rolling on the floor laughing

I have had that happen to me before. You could just delete the duplicate post.

Putting alfalfa tea on daylilies May have been the reason I made it!
