This is the last for tonight. I love roses that provide you with an entire bouquet at the end of each cane. This is Lillian.

I love that Hannah Gordon and that Hawkeye Belle... I avoided Hannah Gordon as it seems really close to Nicole.

Nicole:

Hannah Gordon:
http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...

Could almost be the same exact rose.. looks like same number of petals, same fragrance, blah blah blah. Doesn't mean I don't love it, though!

And I think I should see if I can find me a Hawkeye Belle somewhere.. gorgeous! Smells good?

Nicole actually has many more petals than Hannah Gordon and it's very short, but you're not the only one to think they're practically the same rose.

Kordes came out with three roses in the 1980s that were sister seedlings and looked alike but had definite differences: Hannah Gordon (1983), Nicole (1985), and Tabris (1986). The DG PlantFiles say that Nicole and Tabris are the same rose, and HMF says Hannah Gordon and Tabris are the same rose. They're actually three different roses, but they may not be three different roses in some gardens because nurseries have been confusing them for years and selling one as the other.

Hannah Gordon (KORweiso) came out first. It's a very tall and very wide bush and it has fewer petals than Nicole or Tabris. In my garden it's about 7 feet tall and 6 feet wide, and there's a photo of it above.

Nicole (KORicole) is a very compact floribunda, just 2 or 3 feet tall and about 2 feet wide, and it has more petals than Hannah Gordon.

Tabris (KORtabris) is similar to Nicole in the number of petals, but it's very tall and has fierce thorns. It's as tall as Hannah Gordon, but it isn't as wide. It makes a good pillar rose.

It's a climber that doesn't grow very tall and doesn't spread out. The best pillar roses are about 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide and they grow nicely up and around a pillar without needing to be on a huge arbor or wall.

Hi, Porkpal. It really bothers me that places like DG and HMF carry false information.

Toni, you should be able to pick up Hawkeye Belle in the Roses Unlimited sale this month if there is one. I'm hoping they'll have a sale like last year's, where everything's half price (or even better, $4, the way it was in the second sale last year). Up to last year, they always published a limited list of the sale roses and the discount wasn't as good -- 3 for the price of 2, as I recall.

Zuzu - heheh, beat ya to it.. perused their catalog earlier today jotting down roses that, if available, I'd like. I was wandering around in my back yard this morning and decided that I have room to put in another 40-60 roses, especially if I squish (1-1.5' between rather than 3'). Once I get the roses in, then I can put in other plants to fill in the spaces. And since all my trees are small, I have tons of space around them to put in more roses as it'll be years before they'll have to be moved due to shade. As I was wandering around, I noticed that I only have 3 red roses: Europeana (front yard), Mr. Lincoln (back yard, 3 plants), and Oklahoma (back yard). So, I'm seeing if I can find some other colors other than my infamous blue/mauve (TOO many of those!!! LOL!! Blue Skies, Blue Bayou, Blue Girl, Blueberry Hill, Sterling Silver, Stainless Steel, Singing the Blues, Heirloom, Lagerfeld, Stephen's Big Purple, those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head). So here's my perspective list:

Ice Girl Freelander
Hawkeye Belle
William Shakespeare 2000
Silver Star
Tempi Moderni
Molineux
Lavender Dream
Incense Indigo
English Perfume
Cardinal Hume
Cajun Moon

Yes, there's a couple of more mauves in there, but there's other colors, too. And I'll be trying Molineux again, which I doubt they'll have that on the sale block.

Now back to your purdies. Smiling W/Froggies.

Zuzu, Nice shot of Johnny Walker. Do you have Glenlivet or Whiskey Mac? Might be fun to plant them as a trio? Probably not too far down the path from Old Port. Invite comments like "Intoxicating." Just a thought.

I'm intrigued by Lillian. Haven't seen that one before.

It's fun to have photos of Hannah Gorden, Tabris, and Nicole all in one place. I can see now why there's such terrific confusion about them. Your photos are consistent with the idea that the pinks in HG are just a touch warmer in tone than those of Nicole and Tabris; but I'm not sure I'd get that by just looking at them.

The petals of Jean Giono are suggestive of a tea rose. How big does it get? I read that it's a romantica bred from Graham Thomas with fragrance of spice and cloves. And never a bad bloom! That's gotta go on my short list.

I wanted to grow Whiskey Mac when I lived in NJ. Not a chance, I decided, because it's supposed to be very susceptible to black spot. Maybe time to reconsider.

I also have Brandy, Tequila, and Courvoisier, Steve, and probably many more I can't remember off hand, so it could be a nice theme garden.

My Whisky Mac is never as orange as yours, Alan. In fact, it's almost indistinguishable from Brandy, so there goes the theme garden idea. I wouldn't dare plant them close together. Dovey once lost some tags and asked us to identify some of her roses. I think they were Brandy, Medallion, Just Joey, and Whisky Mac. It was pretty much impossible to do. They all looked so much alike.

You're right, Steve. Hannah's pinks have a slight suggestion of coral in them and the other two don't.

Lillian is an absolutely wonderful rose, but I've never grown a J.B. Williams rose that wasn't wonderful. I bought mine from Hortico. For all its faults, Hortico does carry a wide variety of Williams roses. Roses Unlimited also sells Lillian. If it's in their sale next week, everyone should order it.
