Just received an e-mail blast from Seattle Orchids announcing they are getting some of these. Asking for pre-arrival interest. Never heard of these, but from what they posted they look pretty neat, but somewhat pricey. Anybody have one of these

Yes, I did grow some Disa years ago. I did ok for a couple of years, but then I went on vacation. Disas and vacation don't mix too well.
People had some interesting set ups which included some moving water flow around the plants.

We saw Disa cornuta growing in the Fynbos vegetation at the most Southern tip of Africa/Cape Hope.
Orchid (Disa cornuta)
I do remember the ground being very loose/light.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with them or any growing advice. I have not seen many at a show or a judging table since the mid 90's when a new student judge we had, Michael Tibbs, brought some in via South Africa. Michael is still around.
They are breath taking, so pretty in many respects. Naturally as a judge, we were all intrigued by them and a few judges and visitors wanted to try them.
Now two points may be helpful to mention here. Once we were introduced to them, we never saw them again. My feeling is that if they survived, we should have seen them come to the judging table. They were so beautiful back them, bringing one to the table was almost like getting an automatic award! And number two, once Michael had explained how they normally grew, I was scared off for good and I never tried one. I knew that humidity would be a huge issue for me. I seem to remember lots of water, fairly good light, not necessarily sunlight, and high humidity. I also seem to recall a strong hatred of fertilizer salts building up in the media. Sphagnum I seem to recall was the media of choice.
Other then that Ted, you are on your own I am afraid. They were expensive pants back then and from what you said, they still are. They are, I think another orchid like Pleione, Habenaria etc. that grow from a corymb or tuber.

Thanx for the info. I put down I was interested, but not an order. Seems they are not sure which varieties are arriving. I'll have to decide if I want a plant that is that needy Shrug!

The AOS website lists them as being difficult to grow.
I have no idea as to who exactly provided that opinion but it would make me take notice. I would like to think that it is some how a consensus.
But I understand the desire to try one. From what I recall Disa uniflora, I think it was, made the initial splash. It arrived on the scene with those large, brightly colored blooms.

I found these two small pics of mine.
I mentioned that I bought them in bud in 2005 at the GNYOS and expressed hope that I might do ok, since I use rainwater to water my Orchids. Smiling

See, that is the reason right there. Big beautiful flowers! Seems like a pale peachy color. They certainly are gorgeous.

No special set up Ursula, a bright west window out of direct Sun and sitting in a shallow container of rainwater. When it arrived I noticed it had brown leaf tips though which concern me. It's a small plant. Cost $50. It's hard to find these for sale. I emailed the company (California carnivores) 4 days ago and still no response.

It's my first Disa so fingers crossed it makes it.

TommyRan, I keep my fingers crossed for you here too! This will be lovely!
I had to look up the uniflora, this one actually grows on Table mountain.

That plant looks terrible! I would demand my money back or a new plant. California Carnivores is such a good company - I can't imagine they sent a plant out that looks like that. Keep after them. Send photos.

It is hard to find Disas for sale largely because of their reputation of being difficult to grow.
Keeping that in mind, some vendors might not want to carry plants that come in small and are tough to grow and flower compared to slippers or Phals.
And they are not cheap!!

They finally got back to me and said it should not be a problem, that it happens during flowering. Which is fine bt this thing hasn't flowered yet as far as I can tell. But she is still alive ta this time and doing o.k. I believe. Time will tell. The only thing is it looks like it's potted in LFSM (long fiber sphagnum moss) which stinks because it's going to be a bear to get that untangled at repotting time.

You don't have to get rid of all of the moss when you repot. Just remove what you can remove easily.
Even if you can only change half of it, that should be adequate.
