We have overcast skies today, odd after having several days upper 80's but it's perfect for photography.

Summer Song didn't get cut back this winter so it's huge and gangly, I will trim it after the blooms wind down so it can fill out better.

Just finished with the rose spraying. At least that obnoxious job is done for two weeks until it needs doing again. Worse in the hot weather as I have to wear long sleves, long pants and socks no matter how hot it is outside. Of course I have those all on now but that is what I normally wear gardening this time of year. Summer gardening is in shorts and sleveless. Well, all except the rose spraying.

I am annoyed because I sprayed them all two weeks ago (I keep to every two weeks) but they are not pristine like I want them to be. I shouldn't have any fungus issues but black spot is on some of the leaves. Shouldn't be happening. Early in the year and like I said I already sprayed once and today is the second time.

lolllllllll

I'd be happy to have some leaves to spray.

Did some minor trimming on Friday. Only trimmed about 15-20 roses. Almost all but 1 had to be trimmed down to the ground. Sonja didn't have to be hardly trimmed at all. Artistry, which is about 12" north & Tuscan Sun, which is about 12" south, were trimmed to the dirt. Sonja looks funny 'cuz she's about 3' tall & green. No leaves, but green canes. Probably do more trimming tomorrow night when I get off work. Tonight, when I get off work, I just want to sleep. Planted everything I had picked up / shipped in yesterday, so I'm a little tired & worn out. But here's one that I put in the ground.. Star of the Nile from Roses Unlimited.

I am very fussy about my roses. Those leaves need to be green and perfect or I am not happy.

Rita - Well, gardens aren't for perfection. It's to strive for perfection IMO. I don't spray unless I see aphids, and only if the aphid situation isn't under control by ladybugs. I don't want the good mycorrhiza to be destroyed with too many chemicals. My yard's difficult enough to grow roses in.. don't need to sterilize the soil, too.

I have leaves on many of my roses. It rained for the first time this year last night. A little brisk storm, not really enough to soak in, but at least it was SOMETHING! And as I look out the window at work, I'm seeing another set of storms on the way. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I'm excited about these storms because they're blowing north and west.. which means they'll be filling up the reservoirs! We need it desperately! I'm having to remulch my yards this summer. The front yard's mulch is pretty decayed, but man is the soil richer now than ever! The back yard.. I didn't mulch it too heavily (ran out of mulch) so I'm just having to add more. That, plus the fabric I put down is decaying much faster than I expected (probably dryrot), so having to refabric everything too. Did quite a bit of gardening on Sunday. That's when I planted all my roses (Brown Study, Blue River, Star of the Nile, Blueberry Hill, Lavender Crystal, 2 Smokeys, 2 Fragrant Lavendars, Pope John Paul II, & Love Song), plus some lilacs, veronica, and spirea. I also bought some annuals finally & put those in.. only pansies (I have a flat of petunias, but need to get some pink or white ones to counter the deep purple of those). But what the tough thing was ripping out a section of grass/sod/crabgrass that had creeped in from my neighbor's yard into mine. 18ft long x 2ft wide x 6inch-18inches deep! What the BIG problem was that this is exactly where the Comcast cable was at, so I had to be super careful not to cut that.. so I ended up using my spading fork to break it up & then pulling everything out by hand. Yuck! My legs were killing me for 3 days!

I've pulled the buckets w/mulch from around my Palatine roses that I used for winter protection yesterday so they can get some of that beautiful rain! All but one look like they pulled through just fine. I'm watching Sienna Vigorosa closely.. I didn't mulch that one as thickly & it shows. Sad I hope I didn't kill it. Also, I am going to have to move my South Africa. If it survived, it can't be where I put it. But I'm not sure if it survived. Also, my SugarMoon doesn't look too sprightly, so I'm gonna have to dig around the base & see if it's alive too. I hate winterkill....

On a different note, my lilacs should have a major bumper crop of blooms this year!! Hurray! Hurray! CanNOT wait for that!! My two forsythias finally bloomed for the first time ever, my clematis actually survived the winter, I have beautiful red leaves on almost 100% of my spirea, my agastaches & salvia are waking up..

Spring!! nodding Hurray! nodding Hurray! nodding

We got about an inch of rain yesterday, it rained all through the night, it's completely overcast & threatening right now...

I'm loving it! However, there's one bad spot in my yard that turns into a swamp when we get this kind of rain. I need to work on diverting the water around. I just *hate* seeing it run off into the street! Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling

Toni, a lonnnnngggg time ago while living in Littleton, I remember the South Platte River going to flood and concerns about the Cherry Creek Reservoir holding. Almost 50 years later (oops *Blush* ), sounds like the reverse is true. While I don't wish another flood on anyone, I do hope that it rains and rains for you this year. Smiling

Debra - We haven't had a flood on the South Platte in a few years. For the most part, it'd have to crest over 15' in order for it to cause any structural damage. That said, we had a young boy lose his life a few years ago because he & his mother were walking on the bike trail when a flash flood occurred. She took shelter in a drain pipe and he was ripped out of her arms. Very sad. However, it'd been threatening to rain all day and she really should not have been down there. Still, beyond super sad situation.

Rained most of the day yesterday. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Got probably another inch of rain, which we need desperately. Believe it or not, however, the soil is still bone dry about 4-6" down!! Bleh! Supposed to be getting my house painted last weekend.. looks like it's not going to get done for another 2 weeks. Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling

What's everyone doing for mother's day? I sent my mom some very nice fabric to make a quilt with and we're taking MIL out to dinner tonight. I bought her 4 hanging baskets of annuals & a very pretty deep red tropical hibiscus. I used to buy her a rose bush, but after she killed the 4th one, I decided no more.
