Thread OP
Cannock chase Staffordshire
I live in a lodge on a site where deer visit regularly. They eat everything except hydrangeas. Can anyone suggest what else I might plant either in pots or the grounds.

They don't eat hydrangeas?
Strange. They eat them here...

Suggest checking the poison garden...

Lots of pretty plants are toxic, and safe from the deer...

Also consider fragrant plants like herbs... Those are usually safe too.

You can start the spring with daffodils. and allium come in many forms (bulbs)
they don't like my :blue star amsonia, bee-balm or Russian sage

Good luck the deer can be rather aggravating at times.

Here they don't eat Turk's Cap or Vitex. I don't try to grow many flowering shrubs.

They eat turks cap (Malvaviscus sp.) here...

vitex though... is strongly enough scented that I can plant it outside the deer fence....

Fuzzy plants are sometimes effective too... like verbascum & Lychnis...
Although... they sometimes even eat rose campion in the winter... reducing it's effectiveness as a deer resistant plant...

Solution for deer in my experience... plant lots of different plants, and remove stuff that gets consumed, while propagating the stuff they avoid.

Lantana also survives here.

Welcome!
What is deer-resistant in one area may be a favorite food in another area. Further, their preferences change from year-to-year and season-to-season depending on what other foods are available. The truth is that deer will eat almost anything, including deer-proof plants, if they are hungry enough.

My advice is to start with a local list of deer-resistant plants (from fellow gardeners in your area) and select a few varieties that you would like to try. Plant them out and wait a year or two to see if the deer actually ignore them. If they do, go ahead and do a full planting. If not, try again with different varieties.

Good luck!
