Sandy - Oh My! Your Etched Eyes is huge!!!! What a pretty bloom! What are you fertilizing your daylilies with?

I sent you a TreeMail.

And I KNOW beyond doubt that some seedlings from either Roses In Snow or Mama's Cherry Pie that you sent me are indeed the similar-looking ones in some of my photos! The other 2 gardeners who sent me seeds that same year (several years ago), did not recognize the blooms I got the second year from the shared seeds I was sent. So they are definately from you! And they appear to have been bred for a southern climate. Of all my daylilies, they have the largest clumps and produce some outstanding blooms! Lots of them, too! They are among my top 5 favorites in my garden beds! I THANK YOU for those! I have used them in my own hybridizing of more seed crosses. Definitely came from some awesome genes!

Natalie - I agree that it IS a lot of fun creating our own seeds and ultimately unique plants! I get a kick out of them when they all bloom. Some days I want to call in sick from work so I can stay home and photograph and study their characteristics! I am fascinated by hybridizing and growing some interesting crosses!

Vickie - I am sure you are right. If so, they came from Sandy via seeds! One of my favorite garden daylilies! Lovey dubby

I like buying seeds because I can get better genetics than I can afford, and some of those seedlings I am very happy with. It really is fun anticipating.

Ed - great photos, beautiful daylilies ~Jan

I love seeing all nice seedling pics. What is the correct way to say that you collected bee pollinated seed? I harvested some from Webster's Pink Wonder and others that I would like to plant but I didn't make the cross myself.

I hope to make a few seeds from BAJA CALIFORNIA and TUSK next year.

Teresa, I think you list the pollen parent as unknown, when it's a bee pollinated seed. Last year was just awful for hybridizing, because of the heat, and the bees were much better at it than I was. So, I collected the seeds, but gave almost all of them to my Dad. He couldn't care less who the parents are! I saved just a few from my favorite daylilies, but they are still in the fridge. I'll keep them until next year, and if I have bad luck again, I'll probably plant them. If I have good luck, I'll send them on to Dad. He is a seed addict, and it doesn't matter what kind of seed it is!

So, the mother parent is the first listed? WPW x ? would that be correct?

Teresa, you have it correct. The pod parent is listed first, and then the pollen parent, as in WPW x ? (or unknown). I like your Mom! I am the same way! Hilarious!

Becky, it only costs $20 to register a daylily. That isn't bad at all, and it's a very nice way to honor someone.

Ed, I thought the same thing but I collected 3 pods off of mine this year. It is one of favorite UFs. I stay with my Mom a lot since Dad passed away so I didn't try pollinating this summer on any plants. Next year I intend to at least do a few.

Jan - I agree with you 100%! I love growing daylilies from seeds. It's the ONLY way I could ever have most of the ones that I do have. It's always a thrill when you see the very first buds forming in anticipation of what it will look like! Kinda like Christmas in April, May, June, and July!

Natalie - Your dad and his obsession with seeds .... I can relate! LOL! $20 to register a daylily is much more reasonable that registering a lot of other species of plants! I may do that when I grow some that I really feel represents the person or place that I want to name them after. Most would be in memory of someone.

Ed or anyone - Do you know what causes a plant hybrid/cultivar to be sterile?

Becky, the obsession that my Dad has is so hilarious to me! He's not a flowery type of guy at all. He's a diesel mechanic. Not what comes to mind at all when you think of growing flowers! When he first bought his house, which is in the high desert in Oregon, the previous owners had flowers planted everywhere. He said it was the stupidest thing he had ever seen! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing He didn't water them, of course, and they died. 10 years later, and he is OBSESSED! He's built raised beds everywhere, and starts everything from seed. He even built a big greenhouse last year so that he can winter sow them! Oh, and he had ever table, chair, window, the guest bathtub, and the guest bed covered in pots full of seedlings last winter! Hilarious! Hilarious! He told everyone that if they wanted to visit, they'd have to sleep on the couch!

When I first got into daylilies about 4 years ago, I ended up with about 20 that weren't what they were supposed to be. It's a long story, so I'll spare the details. I got new daylilies, and gave him my old ones, which were planted on a hilly area, in honor of his dog that passed away 3 years ago. The hill has always been called "Chloe's Hill". I told him how to hybridize them if he wanted, but he told me that he thought having my leftover seeds would be so much easier! Blinking He always says, "I'm not into hybernizing". Yep, hybernizing! I've given up trying to get him to say it right! So, I've given him my leftover seeds, and I know that once he sees them bloom, he'll be hooked. I can't wait until he is hooked!

I can safely say .... I am not nearly as obsessed as your dad! LOL! He sounds like quite a character! You watch ... he'll become a hybridizer with some named and registered cultivars in the future and will be all about the details of creating and registering his own hybrids!!! That's just too funny that he had seedlings growing everywhere that guests had to sleep on the couch! Too funny! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!
