I have been given a trellis and was wondering if there's any sedum that will climb. My sarmentosum runs or spreads like crazy as has 1 of my ice plants.Any advice or opinions on what to use on a trellis in my rock garden.I don't have to put it in the bed but this bed has taken on such a life of it's own. :grouphug:It has sedum, semp's,delosperma and a sun dial in it (so far).
This isn't a plain trellis, it may not even be called a trellis maybe an arbor not sure, it has 2 sides a top and a gate.I have some idea's for the other side of the gate so this will be placed in the back of the bed opening it up into whatever i decide???!!!!
I cleaned it up this weekend & it looks good and is keeping correct time so far today.Need to research sun dial's & their origin.
I will get some pictures of it cleaned up.Here's a few of my other sedum.I think the 1st.one is 'Neon'
Here's 'angelina' & 'blue spruce' this month, with such beautiful colors, 'angelina' turned so dark red then got the bright yellow
Here they are last july, these have spread out & laid down so much.I hope they will fill in & get full again this year like they are in these photo's from last summer.
Sorry some how i posted 6 pictures of the 'angelina' & 'blue spruce' instead of 3, at least they are slightly different photo's.I take to many pictures.

We don't care how many you post Jelinda. We love seeing them.
I can't think of any sedum that will climb. But Chris grows clematis in her semps beds. You might give one a try.

The 'angelina' has had an amazing color change it has spread out so much it seems to be thinner.I have noticed a lot of new growth on the stems. I think once it gets to the width i want i may have to trim the ends or it's going to take over.I didn't realize how fast it would spread.
This is the first winter i've had it and it's growth is amazing. In the pictures in my last post, the photos taken in the middle of Feb. it's almost completely red, then in less than a month actually about 2 weeks time it has put out all those bright yellow pom pom tips of new growth. That is why i didn't trim back the tips, it seems to be going to fill itself in without any help from my trimmers (scissors).
If i'm not mistaken the 1st pictures of it so red were taken after the ice & snow melted and the other 2 are recent, the sun has been shining and temp's are getting up into the high 70's to low 80's during the day.
Here they are the beginning of Jan. before snow storm & then the ice storm 2 weeks later.
I've noticed some of my photo's are fuzzy and the only thing i can come up with is, if i go out early is when they are fuzzy.Could the cold be fogging up my camera lens i wonder ???

Yes, change in temperature can do that to our cameras. They have to acclimate, then they won't do the fogging things. I thought my camera had something terrible wrong with it, the first time that happened.
Jojoe, your sedum sure do like healthy! Here is a picture just after I had added to and re-did my semp bed. You can see the clematis growing on a trellis. It's been there for years and does real well.
Hi Chris (goldfinch4) or anyone...I have a question...
my 'Dazzleberry' and 'Cherry tart' and others in this group (can't remember the names - none of them are coming up yet. All of my other sedums are showing some growth (except Lemon Curl which I know is not coming back ) we did have colder than usual temps but aren't these plants living outdoors in your zone 5?? Do you think I may have lost them due to the combo of cold and wet? I didn't cover them or anything (they're in fast draining soil but it's the Northwest...its wet out! ) Just curious if I should wait, or give up, and plant something else in the planters
Thanks
Hi Greg,
My Lemon ball and Lemon Curl ( may be the same plant but that's how they were marked) are toast. Looked on the tag said they would be good to zone 7 so must be the wet. 'Dazzleberry' and 'Cherry Tart' are up but 'Cherry Tart' has only one small growing bud. What about your Lime zinger? Mine is growing well. These are all in my big containers. Hope they come up for you. If not I could make starts.
Well, first, I'm happy to say we had some temps in the low 50s and upper 40s last week and our snow is finally melting! I can even see some sedum and semps! (Although they're not real pretty right now.) But 'Cherry Tart' is coming up already, even though it dies completely back to the ground here in winter. The other two are still buried in snow but I'm pretty sure they'll be back since this is their 2nd winter here.
Sedum report: Fine Gold Leaf survived our very cold winter. I have it in two places. It looks pretty ragged but should perk right back. I never could get those Lemon Ball, Lemon Curl, etc to survive no matter what I did-- containers or in the ground.
Connie that is cool! My fine gold leaf didn't make it, but I'm hoping there will be many seedlings coming up!! I did see one, but figure it'd take years for one little seedling to become a "real plant"
If other people's plants are coming up, I think I probably lost these ones...Oh well...moving onto delosperma, and sedums which survive wet and cold...don't want to fuss over plants that aren't going to make it here
Thanks for info everyone!!
Chris glad you have some signs of spring arriving!! A friend of mine in Michigan said it was 3 degrees the other morning...brrr stay warm!
Bev, yes, I plan on doing the sedum bed this year. Doing any work in the gardens is still 4-6 weeks off. The frost is 6 feet down in the ground yet. Everybody hooked up to city water around here has to let their water run in a trinkle 24/7 because of all the freezing/breaking water pipes.
