Davis1186, I've been looking at pics of Lenten Roses! Some of them are absolutely beautiful. How much earlier do they bloom before peonies where you are? I need to do some more research on how they would perform here in Colorado and how deer resistant they are. Would love to see pics of the Lenten Roses as well as the peonies, I have more snow on the ground as of last night and not a single green bit above ground yet....

I second Annette's welcome to the Peonies Forum, too!!!

I took a pic of these "new" peonies. From seeds, 2-3 years old. Not sure.
Do you think any will bloom this year?
I have no idea what they should bloom like...

And... a tree peony that has been aborting the buds for the last 2-3 years... I am really hoping to see some color this spring. Well, according to the label, it should be a pink one. ALSO... adding to the bud-abortion, I don't know why it's not growing taller, but rather wider... ???

Calin, your plants look very healthy. I'm not sure how long it takes for seedlings to bloom.
Your tree peony looks fantastic, I hope you get to see blooms this year. I wonder what cases the bud abortion?

Perhaps they're buried too deeply? Peonies like their rhizome baking in the sun, so mine are showing or barely under the surface. That said, my tree peony has had 2 blooms in 3 years. Hoping for more this year.

I had 1 bloom the 1st year, and 3 blooms last year. We'll see what happens this year with Shimanishiki.

fixpix - your tree peony buds certainly look healthy enough. Can't see why the buds would abort like that. My tree peonies are planted fairly deep, and that has not been a problem as it can be with the herbaceous peonies. Does the weather get hot really fast as they are about to bloom?

I have some self-seeded peonies growing for the past few years, but none have bloomed yet. I read somewhere that it may take up to 5 yrs?

I really can't figure out why the tree peony is aborting the buds. Same thing happens with both plants I got.
Could it be they are both close to two walnut trees?
:)
It's funny. There's a tree close to each peony. I "borrowed" the piece of land from my dad, and he insists on keeping those walnut trees and some plum trees on it.
So I have to deal with that.
Anyway, if same thing happens this year, I will move them further away from the trees.

And I don't think it's a matter of how deep it is. Or... could it?
Do these "trees" also have rhizomes? I'd think they are different from the herbaceous ones.

I'm excited about those seedlings. I got two kinds (could tell the difference by the leaves). And they are also different from the "common" ones I already have in the garden.

We'll see if it really takes 5 years to bloom.

I don't think you can bury tree peonies too deep if they're grafted. Too shallow a d the herbaceous root will take over. Maybe yours just needed a couple of years for the tree root to develop enough to support the blooms. Here's hoping this will be the year! On my way home from a long weekend in FL, supposed to be heading in to freezing rain. No peonies for me for quite a while. Thanks to you all in warmer climes for the early glimpse into spring!

I finally see a teeny, tiny hint of color above ground on 3 peonies! All planted last fall and 2 (P. Mlokosewitschii and P. Obovata var. Willmottiae ) so tiny that they won't bloom for several years. Other is a double red fernleaf; never tried one before but fell in love with pics from this forum last spring, ended up getting several, only seeing growth on one so far, though. Still too tiny to show up in a pic, maybe in a few days......here's hoping!

Hurray! I tip my hat to you. Glad you are finally starting to see some growth. I'll be I interested to see what my peonies are doing when I get home on Saturday, I haven't seen them in a week.

Pic of one of my divisions from last year. I did several and, so far, all are doing fine. The mix of singles and doubles should look nice after all 16 begin to bloom. The neighborhood cats must think they died and went to heaven to find such a large sandbox to use as a public toilet. I covered all my peonies with a layer of sand last fall for physical protection from ice so now it just requires a soft paintbrush to uncover them.

It's so nice to see all of the beautiful peonies starting to wake up for the spring! Keep the pictures coming, we're supposed to get snow/rain tonight so spring feels a long way off....The tulips are starting to break ground here so peonies can't be that far behind!

Still snow covered here! But maybe later in the week I can check. I got three new ones from a co-op in the fall.

Where in Michigan, Jennifer? My Mother-in-Law lives in Webberville, we're vacationing on Lake Orion 1st week of June. Planning to visit UofM's peony garden while we're there!
By the way, that is frost on the mulch by the peony and it was 10 am when I took that picture! We were supposed to get more snow last night but it just got really cold instead....

I'm a bit east of Detroit. Webberville is about 1 1/2 hours from here. I lived in Ann Arbor for 17 years and never visited u of M's Peony garden! Hard to believe now.

Glad to see others having peony growth. They have continued to put on growth here. I'm most excited to see if Walter Faxon, Edulis Superba and Lillian Wild will bloom this year. They've been planted since March of 2012, and have struggled. They seem to have a lot of pips this year, finally.
