Time to start moving the house plants and tropicals back inside. I have quite a few really large pots so it is a bit of a job.

My picture isn't the best quality (and apparently having the flash on was the only way to make it look somewhat nice), but this is how I display my houseplants. Having limited space and learning how plants react to being further away from the window (despite being a Southeast window, it acts more like an East window than a South window), this is where they seem most happy. I do have a few in the windowsill, but you can only really see one of two 'Spider Plants' and my Sansevieria. I am also attempting to root a ZZ Plant leaf and a ZZ Plant stem cutting (which are also in the window).

Thanks for looking.

I agree Planto. We probably all need more room

I had planned to have my Solarium built this year but other things took the money. I am building it on the side of the house and I can sit in there in the winter. It will be my tropical garden.

Cinta,
That sounds very nice. You'll have to show us some pictures once it's built and full of plants. I know I'd love to see it. Smiling

Cinta, great shots of your pretty plants and their containers; I too like to use cache pots for displaying plants and hiding the plastic pots.

Planto, Nice display! Your babies look very happy and healthy in the location of that bright window.

I had a large ZZ plant a few years ago and decided to try rooting a couple of leaves in water; I wasn't sure if it would work but figured I'd give it a try. I stuck them in a vase of water and placed the vases on a shelf on my kitchen wall. They just sat there for a couple of months doing nothing but I left them and they eventually ended up putting out roots and bulbs. I don't remember what I ever did with them, probably gave them away to neighbors when we moved and I downsized with my plant collection.

This was the mama plant and the little babies that I rooted:

I never tire of looking at plant pics, bring 'em on! Good luck with your project! And why didn't I think of that?! Just build a solarium... :+) Like DUH, right?

I want to use cache pots, but can't seen to get the hang of it. They never fit just right, so the inner pot is perfectly hidden BUT I can still get it out w/o using 2 pliers when it needs water. Gotta remember to remove the inner pots if it's going to rain. I guess risking breaking them by making holes would be better than how they are now - upside-down next to the plants... How do people deal with this?

Thank you Lin. Those are not cache pot, I plant directly into the pots.

Tiffany I am one of those people that do not worry about holes in my pots. But I water very little indoors in the winter. In the summer when we have crazy rain and the pots fill up I tip them and leave them on their sides until they dry. I only do that with my succulents. The house plants sit there swimming in water and they do not care. The pots are usually dry in 2 days when it is hot summertime.

My decorative pots the plants are all planted directly in the pot.

I have gone against every rule that every pot has to have drainage and plants not sitting in water. The only plants I have killed are the ones I do not water. The only plant I make sure have drainage hole is cactus. Those I only use terracotta and drainage holes. All other plants are no hole and never planted in terracotta. Every plant I have tried to grow in a terra cotta pot had died.

These same plants have been in this pot for 10 yrs. This is a thrift store pot I picked up for one dollar. The common jade plant in the middle if you notice has a trunk it has been in there so long it has Bonsaied itself. The other plants grow so fast and thick I take cuttings and send them to people for free. It is the pot I thinned out when I offered cuttings last month. When it rains the pot fills up with water I just poor off the excess.

This would be said to be the worst thing for succulents of being wet and certain death. For me it is survival and over growth. I do not know why when every book says no, no, no. Go figure.

If you click on my photobucket link and go to my suc and cactus folder you will see how many pots I have with absolutely no drainage.

I use cache pots for many plants but I do have a couple of indoor containers without drainage that are direct planted and I have pretty good luck with them, mainly because I am very lax at watering. I've been growing house plants for @ 48 years and in the beginning I had trouble keeping anything alive because I over-watered to the point of drowning everything. Green Grin! There are many plants, if they sit in water without any possibility of drainage, the roots, stems get so saturated that they rot. I have such a short attention span and I'm too absent minded to remember to tip anything on it's side to drain.

Well, I've been baking cookies for our fall festival on Saturday at our local botanical gardens and I need to go get a batch out of the oven before they burn ...

Holly that is my favorite color pot. I am going to do a white pot display this winter.

Lin that is why no drainage works so good for me. Especially when the plants are indoors. They are lucky if they get a sip of water once a month. Most times it is every two months.

I just go out on the patio and if the we have a big rain I just turn them on their side as I walk around in the morning sipping my cup of tea. Some I just pick up and pour the rain water out and set the pot back down. The sun dries them up the rest of the way.

Debbie trust me I do not have a clue they have been in that pot for 10 yrs. I was not kidding. People have sent me plants through the years unnamed and I just call them pretty.

I am pretty sure I sent you a cutting. If you give it lots of sun it will be that color. Also, It is another reason I like white pots they show the colors of the plants better. I have taken some succulents and put them in other color pots and I am amazed at the different color appearance.

Let me see if I can find a comparison. Okay found one this is that same plant in a blue grey pot.

Sorry purple I missed this. I had priced the greenhouses disconnected from the house and the (solarium) is a glass inclosed room. Solarium is just a better description of what I priced. Because I will only need 3 walls of glass and I have the door leading to the roof of the garage off the spare bedroom. It is cheaper than a free standing greenhouse by thousands of dollars. Building a greenhouse was almost the cost of building a small house. I cannot afford that. Rolling on the floor laughing

This is what is going to go in next year it will just be over the garage. The garage is a 3 car so it will be a good size and I hope I will have enough room for my houseplants and tropicals for the winter.

Yes, Cinta, you did send me that plant, that's why I was asking if you know what it is. It's a lovely plant. I think I saw a photo that looked a lot like it today, but I'm brain dead right now and can't remember what it was. Grumbling I'll post a link when it comes back to me. And yes, I too, like the idea of a solarium vs. a greenhouse.
