[quote="chelleMy first sprout (indoors) of the 2014 season is...Kidney Vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria var. coccinea)! :hurray:[/quote]

Funny... I bought these seeds from somewhere, the looked cool, but along the way I lost interest. I bought a whole bunch of other seeds, and since space is limited, I always seemed to give priority to other plants. So these are still in the packet, and I always "review" all the seeds when I have an extra pot/spot by the window.

Are these really cool plants?

I guess I was fascinated by the pics I could find on google.

Does it ever happen to you? Buy some seeds and then just postpone their sowing?

Leftwood said:I have Anthyllis vulneraria var. coccinea seed this year, too. Haven't planted them yet, though.

I assume you scarified them, Chelle? How long did it take to sprout?

No, I didn't scarify them. I soaked them overnight in cool water, then drained the seeds into a piece of coffee filter, returned it to the plastic seed baggie and set it in a cool north window. My notes are as follows.

*soak, cool (60 - 68 degrees), light, 3-4-14 (8 seeds)
3-10-14 radicle emergence.
Potted up in cactus mix and aquarium gravel.
First sprout appeared 3-13-14.

So, six days for visual signs of germination. Smiling

Thanks Chelle.
That makes it easier for the rest of us.
I think that it is a member of the legume family so if short of space---
we could soak, and sow outside like peas.
It might take a little longer for germination that way.

Oh, yeah; I'm sure it would. Smiling I think I just have a lot of trouble with critters eating seeds if I try them in situ. Some of those may eventually sprout somewhere, but it's not likely to be where I put them! Hilarious!

It's been known to happen. Once or twice.

Are those your winter sowing , Rick ?
I soaked the anthyllis seeds overnight,
and then rinsed them well, and then poured them onto moist paper towel.
They are on my stove in a warm kitchen, and a few are showing signs of the radicle emerging.

Yesterday, I thought I might lose my single sprout to damping off, but, conversely, it really only needed more water to stand up straight. Hurray! It's definitely looking happy and healthy today. Big Grin

I wish, Caroline!

I finally found a wide, low plastic tub with a translucent lid last fall, but never did get around to a WS crop.

Hopefully, I will get around to spring planting when the ground dries out a little.

My WS problem is always space... I have to do it in my apartment.
On the balcony. And it's packed!
So whenever I have free time (and light) I go to the balcony and try to re-arrange the pots, thinking where I could squeeze in another pot, but sometimes I have to give up.
Seedlings farther from the windows are leaning towards them, and I just don't want to have weak seedlings.
In my living/bed room the windows are also packed. Both outside and inside.
Oh well...

I know when addicted to gardening we do strange things.
I am also doubling up some seedlings.
I did verbena bonseriensis and papaver bracteatum in the same tray.
They are going outside today when the snow stops.

I think every inventive gardener does that. I use pieces of stiff plastic as dividers on the pot surface. When you get seed packets from seed exchanges, and there turns out to be only one or two viable seeds that may or may come up anyway..... why waste the space?

And of course, in the old days when milk cartons were plentiful and we cut them in half lengthwise: annual/vegetable seeds were always planted in rows like a "mini vegetable garden".

I didn't divide them off.
I scattered the verbena bonsariensis seeds throughout the tray,
and then scattered the papaver bracteatum over them.
Then I'll plant them out as clumps of both.
The verbena will die off at the end of season, and the papaver will continue on.

That was not my original idea.
A few years ago the commercial seed companies came up with "fuseables".
They sell pellets which contain say a petunia seed and a bacopa seed.
Last year I doubled up blue Nolana with white Brachycome daisies.
And white Nolana with blue Brachycome daisies.
The daisies did well, but the Nolana should have been given a head start.

Oh, I also do the doubling... but like Rick does. Separated by a "wall" I use markers I make from yoghurt cups (I cut them with scissors in stripes).
I always try to sow same kind of seeds in the same pot. But it often turns out to have more germination in one half, and very little in the other.
Like it happened now with red and white Armeria.
White is germinating nicely, and the red is slow. One here, one there. And it makes me wonder whether I scattered white seeds in the red half by mistake.
Only the blooms will tell the truth.
