Scraps of frost cloth and pipe supports?

I tried for 2 years to use shade cloth over my tomatoes, first white, then black. It actually made things worse. I got 1 tomato this year. Anyway, I held them up with 20' PVC pipes.
So........ this is one of my 3 papaya plants I grew from seed this spring.

It is too cold winters here in TX to grow papayas , so, I've put PVC pipes and frost cloth all around it

and, heat pads on the ground. The front can easily be closed if it is going to be under 40° at night. I am trying to keep it alive over winter as it takes almost a year to ripen the fruit. Anyone have some more ideas?
