And Rick, if you DO run out I have several lifetimes worth from salvaging half a dozen blinds from my MIL's house...

I often write on them with pencil or marker, but also have a Brother P-Touch labeler that I got really cheap from Staples a couple of years ago (the label tape is another matter in terms of $$, however), and those labels easily last several seasons. (And you can actually read them, unlike some of my handwritten ones...)

The handwriting problem is one reason I don;t even try to find fine-line extra-permanent Magic Markers.

When the line is thick, my handwriting is even less readable.

I used my old siding that rotted off the house to make 6" raised beds in my garden:

And then, added compost in the middle.

And, sand on top:

Then, I sprinkled winter seeds.
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Chard
Cabbage
Collards
Radishes
Carrots

I read online that in order to create a winter home for garden lizards, you need to have a container they can enter, with leaves to keep them warm. So, I have a long board in my garden, that I've been putting strawberry buckets on as I get them.

Thumb of 2014-10-07/texaskitty111/524db8
And I put feed bags on the ground to eliminate weeds, and small pieces of old siding on the bags, to keep my lizards dry:

Then, I found that the rain makes puddles on the feed bags, so I draped more over the board:

This fall, I'll rake up leaves, and stuff as many as i can fit under the board. It is my hope that the lizards will become free insecticide.

We bought an old freezer at a yard sale about 5 years ago. I knew it wasnt a modern energy efficient freezer, but i didnt expect our electric bill to increase $200.00 a month! So, we cleaned it out, and ive been trying to think of something to do with it.
1. Chick brooder? No, too hard to clean
2. Pond? No, might leak coolant
3. Planter? Tacky
4. Seed starter? YES!
Can't say it works great yet, but here it is, after much tweaking to get temperature right:

Thumb of 2015-01-18/texaskitty111/93d36c
and the door works well for storing small items:

Thumb of 2015-01-18/texaskitty111/a37469
still to do;
Figure out how many heat matts to leave on at night when i close the door. All 6 makes it 104˚, none makes it 50˚ . Also have to get some desk lamps that have two directions i can put the led lights right over the plants.

Do you move the plants after they have germinated? Just seems like not enough air if the door is sealing.

I will transpant, and move when they start leaning. I could put one of our small fans in there at night too, keep the air moving a little.

I picked up a couple of cheap bath lights for the greenhouse freezer, and dean hardwired them all together so i only have one plug. I have a combination of florescent and led plant lights in there. So, now ill have to start over figuring out how many heat pads to leave on at night. It was 72˚ in there last night. Some things are sprouting.

My freezer hothouse is doing great! Even hot weather plants like eggplant and peppers are growing. Also, sweetmeat winter squash that I tried to grow last year in 6 different locations and times has sprouted.

Thumb of 2015-01-23/texaskitty111/f25d4f
Getting some flats ready for transplants. Beans should be first, followed by squash.

Thumb of 2015-01-23/texaskitty111/553dd7

Then I can just plop them in a hole can and all as soon as its warmer

Carpet?

Thumb of 2015-01-26/texaskitty111/492e2d

I had my carpet pulled up in strips, and put it upside down for pathways through the heavily traveled areas in my garden. I realize it looks tacky, but iI don't care. If you had to pick off 100 or so grass burrs every time you walked carefully through the garden, you wouldn't care either. Wish I had more of it. It didn't even come close to covering all the areas I wanted to cover.
