I've been hoping that some Monarchs would show up around here lately, but no luck so far. Also didn't see any this week during my trip to Houston. And yet, I found eggs and tiny new caterpillars on my DD's milkweed in Houston yesterday. If I had brought my magnifying loupe with me, I would've been able to tell if they were Monarchs or Queens before I left. I didn't see any wild milkweeds along the roads on the way or back, but maybe there were some that just weren't big enough to spot easily. There are a few wild roadside milkweeds I've noticed in my own area, but no eggs or cats found so far. I've seen a couple of Tiger Swallowtails and some Pipevine Swallowtails lately.

Oh my gosh, I wish I could send you guys some Monarchs because they are decimating my milkweed. A large group of the ones in my butterfly garden seemed to have known how to travel from the Tropical Milkweed back to the Giant milkweed because they've eaten the former and now they're destroying the latter! In good news, my milkweed bug problem seems to be solved because there's no milkweed left for them to be on! Like 95% of the cats are big enough to go into their chrysalis which is what they'll do if they run out of food so I'm not too concerned. And despite my alarm, I still have a few pockets of milkweed they haven't found yet. Oddly enough, no one is on my Giant Milkweed right in front of that house and that stuff is like seven feet tall! But it always seems to be the last milkweed they use. Anyway, here's a pic showing the lean times in the garden.

What has the world come to when three caterpillars have to share the same stalk! I would take them to the museum but despite having just ordered a bunch of milkweed, we actually don't seem to have very much. It's weird how nature works like that. You buy it, they eat it.

In better news, there is plenty of Senna ligustrina (Privet Cassia) for the sulphurs to eat. As you may recall, I found two Orange-Barred Sulphurs earlier this week. The huge one went into his chrysalis like two days later but the other guy is still eating. Well, today I found two Cloudless Sulphurs. Despite the one munching on my flower buds, he was still a green-form caterpillar which is their usual look.

Thumb of 2014-04-05/mellielong/425d22

The other one was practicing his yoga. Seriously, I believe certain caterpillars are hardcore yoga enthusiasts. Just watch a Spicebush Swallowtail cat doing that pose where they stick their head and chest up to the sky. It's cute but I always wonder why they're doing it? Ok, here's the other Cloudless Sulphur. See how their green color really blends in well? Apparently, the stripes break up their body line to make it hard for predators to detect them.

I didn't think I was going to get any Monarchs to settle down long enough for a picture but this one obliged. There were at least three or four I think, flying around. I also had a Gulf Fritillary flying but he only stopped long enough to harass the Monarch in this photo and then he flew over the house.

Thumb of 2014-04-05/mellielong/4bad66

Here's one of the Gulf Frit cats on my Passiflora suberosa. I ended up not having to move any of them to the other Passiflora since I still have enough of this one left. But there are still several cats eating on it. I'll have to keep a close eye to make sure I don't get a second wave. The poor plant needs time to recover! FYI, these guys have spines but don't sting but like I tell all the kids (and adults) at the museum, if you don't know what it is, don't touch it!

Thumb of 2014-04-05/mellielong/84854c

And this one is kind of blurry probably because the lighting in my house isn't so great. But this is the Orange-Barred Sulphur's chrysalis. I'm going to take all the Sulphur cats to the museum tomorrow but I'm keeping the chrysalis so look forward to its emergence. FYI, it's on cheesecloth. I keep my cats in those plastic critter keepers but they have slots in the top that smaller (and even medium-sized) caterpillars can crawl through. (Ask me how I know!) So I put cheesecloth over it to keep them from escaping. And as you can see, the cats really seem to like to attach to it to make their chrysalises. So it works on two levels.

Well good, because I'm trying to teach here! Apparently, it's working. I guess I've been doing this for about seven or eight years now and volunteering at the museum for a total of about five years (with a break in between when I was really sick). Still tons to learn but I love sharing the knowledge. And when I get kids at the museum that are totally excited about caterpillars and butterflies that just rocks my world! Heck, I like excited adults, too! Plus, it usually gives me an avenue to talk about native plants and how we can all help the environment, etc. I try not to be preachy about it, just factual. And of course, Florida is a big tourist hot spot so we get people from all over the country (and other countries!) so it's fun to show them something they'll never see where they're from.

Well, yesterday was mostly caterpillars so today it's butterflies! I released about 20 butterflies today at MOSI! Which actually made me feel bad because they're going to rescreen and pressure wash the flight cage tomorrow so my boss and her cohort have to catch all the butterflies first! Yikes! I would volunteer to help but somehow I think I might be more of a hindrance. Sometimes too many people just get in the way.

Lots of Zebra Longwings in the flight cage today. The last butterfly I released was a Zebra Longwing and it's good I saw him because he couldn't pull one of his wings out of the chrysalis. I got him to grab onto my finger and I gave a gentle tug and it slid right out. It's good to know my human strength still tops butterfly strength! Plus, I like helping a butterfly out. Otherwise, we have to put them down and that makes me sad (I had to put three down today). But in happier thoughts, here's some Zebra Longwings!

Love was in the air today. I caught the Zebra Longwings and the Great Southern Whites "in the act". Shocking!

And this is probably one of the Orange-Barred Sulphurs I brought in as a caterpillar. I was going to take my caterpillars to the museum today but two of them decided to go into their chrysalis mode so I was like, "Ah, forget it. I can feed one caterpillar for a few days". The last one is almost big enough to be in his chrysalis, too. To be fair, I found two too-small-to-tell-what-kind of sulphur cats today at the museum. They're probably Cloudless as they were on the Cassia.

Thumb of 2014-04-06/mellielong/c40982

I couldn't get a good shot of the Gulf Fritillary in the flight cage but I got one in the garden! By the way, this is the bad lantana that it's on. Don't plant it. It's very invasive. Use a native or sterile species if you must. I know the butterflies can't resist the lantana, but you can resist planting it! When I was a kid, our daycare always told us it was poisonous and not to eat it. I'm not sure how toxic it is but I have heard from other sources it will make animals and humans sick.

Thumb of 2014-04-06/mellielong/985d3f

I got to release a very cooperative Buckeye!

Thumb of 2014-04-06/mellielong/230e87

And is it just me or is this a huge Monarch?! I put her on the lavender but as you can see she was bending it so I moved her.

Yes don't plant lantana. I have to keep an eye out in the garden because it germinates from bird droppings. Its saving grace is that it can be impenetrable for feral cats but not for small birds.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Just beautiful, tarev! Lately, not many butterflies, even on really warm days, mostly sulfurs. But I went out to water some potted plants and spotted this Queen!
