I agree

This is what I tell gardeners about the use of alfalfa:

For long term affect for hostas, especially, and daylilies, soak alfalfa overnight, and put four cups of the mixture in each hole where you will plant.

The alfalfa cubes are cheaper and will be more slow release, feeding hostas up to four years. I am just recently using for daylilies the same way and I do not have much data on the duration of feeding.

Making sure that the mixture is very watery is very important, and make sure to water it daily for the next week or so.

For established plants, especially hostas, use this mixture as a side dressing. And again, water daily.

That still sounds like an awful lot of work! I'm more of a "throw it on the ground and forget about it" kind of gardener. I usually just spread 10-10-10 fertilizer in the early spring, and have had nice growth. Thought I'd try this and see how it does...Paul's hosta always look so beautiful and healthy, I think he must be doing something right!

I have been mixing some pellets with the potting soil along with extra perlite for better drainage, I really need that here. If you are going to throw it on the ground be sure to water it in good and do it as early as possible because this stuff seemed to be attracting flies last year. So with the exception of early spring I mix it with the potting soil and throw the Milorganite on top of the ground around the hostas and daylilies. The Milorganite does not attract flies and you might think it would. LOL.
I have not seen the need to side dress the hostas they do quite well with the Milorganite, the pellets I throw out in the spring is like a treat for them also a good spray of Miracle Grow (hose feeder) in the fall. I do love my hostas!!

I put a good handful of alfalfa pellets in each hole when I plant hostas. And in the summer, I like to make the tea. But I also add fish emulsion and Epsom salts to the tea.

I did add the pellets to the soil before I re-planted them. They are already growing!! I was reading on the Epsom salt and think I will start using it also.
