Here is a full face pic of Durham Dream. It is a space age and very tall. I lived in Durham, NH for a few years and bought the rhizome last year at our club sale just for the name! Addicts and enablers! Smiling

Welcome Marilyn. Your season must be coming to a close.
Thanks for the comments from all.

Here are a couple more, hope I have not posted these before:

As to the method, I found that using a high pixel setting and macro mode works well, and I often take the entire bloom from various angles and then crop it to get rid of the trash, then crop again to show just certain parts, and save both versions. Camera is an oldie found on eBay as "new old stock" which needed new batteries it was so old, a pocket sized Samsung L73. My large one with zoom lens never worked well on macro mode and was 10x the price and colors were off in the reds often!

Dave -- I'm not skilled at the cropping, etc. -- if I can't go out and photograph it, it ain't gonna get photographed. Green Grin! The beard-shots (both beard and throat) that I've been taking have been intentional photographs of just that part of the Iris. No tripod -- just holding as still as I can. I also have an old camera -- also purchased on Ebay -- mine's a Konica Minolta DiMage G600. It sure tries hard to take a good picture, given half a chance.

I'm glad you differentiated between a beard shot and a throat shot -- although I'm already struggling with definitions. If you take a head-on picture of just the beard, sort of below so that you're not showing any of the inside of the bloom -- is it still a throat shot?

I would guess that to be a "throat" shot the internals must be visible, uvula, tonsils and all! Here is another I got between storms. Pix of the falls would be really bad as one storm had hail and wind so lots of rips.

OK -- so is this a throat-shot or a beard-shot? The standards wrap up inside each other and hide the interior parts. This is Chantilly Bride:

I don't think we were differentiating beard vs throat shots per se. I just think of them as throats when you see the interior, but Paul was going for beards when he started this thread. So I guess Chantilly Bride is a beard shot since she is being coy with her interior parts. A shy bride! Hilarious!

Have to agree. Beard shots could be from any angle. I do like the side shots that show the distinct layers of a beard's coloration. Makes it a good possibility for id if they were all in a file somewhere. I have added several to the database.

yes, beards can be tipped a different color over the main beard hairs.

Loving the beautiful beard and throat shots here, thanks for starting this thread Paul!
I find the beards so fascinating, and some really look like thick caterpillars! I also find them very useful for IDing, I take them for clematis pistils too as so many are unique. I hope everyone here imports their images from this thread. Super easy to do!

I don't use a tripod even though I own one, I just make sure the focus is locked in for what I want in focus. Thank goodness taking digital allows you to instantly see if you have to shoot again. Thumbs up

Dave -- that was an amazing shot -- quite a camera you have there!! What was the Iris?

Paul -- also thanks from me for starting this thread. And thanks for identifying your photos. nodding Love that little lifty beard on It's Magic. And the beard on Puff The Magic looks like it could crawl away and become a butterfly!!

I've had Patriotic Heart for at least 5 years, and it's a big clump of leaves and has never bloomed. It's so nice. Love the beards.
