Great news, Bert. So you might move to Corinth this summer, or perhaps sometime later?

Yeh it's a year early, but the houses in midtown rarely come on the market so I feel I have to make an offer and see what happens. I've got a realtor working on this condo here in Memphis and it will list by Monday. She said supply was low here in midtown Memphis right at the moment and buyers are still around. So what a mess, everything depends on everything else, like the domino effect.

It looks good that you will sell though, and perhaps at a very good price. You can build that grand greenhouse in Corinth! Hurray! When the condo sells, how soon would you then make Corinth your home?

I hope to be in Corinth by sept, can't wait to come see what you have in your yard and get greenhouse info. Well I'm on the road to see about the Corinth house but will only make it a day trip. Long drive ahead (2hrs).

I recommend they be sprayed with fire retardant as well. Hilarious!

I see some smoke in the sky up in the northeast. Ursula must be doing well.

One new bloomer out in the OC today but I think it is a good one. Officially, this is Myrmecocattleya [Myc.] Luster. It still looks like a Schmbocattleya to me.

It is a young plant but it looks like it will control the growth and yes, it has a nice fragrance.

Sounds good! Like I need more orchids to tend. I'm spending my days re-arranging pots as the sun moves, and the trees grow. In my tiny space, that's a full time job. I'm debating whether to remove the shade cloth and "walls" at the moment. None of this is automated here. Hilarious!

Can't wait to see Silva purchases! Ursula, Jim, do you know of any instance of a Odont or oncidium crossing with the separated Rossioglossum group? What would they be called so I can look them up? I have in my mind that the size of the flower would be large and retain the waxy feel.
I have Ross Aztec Fire budding now in June, and e it's R schllepelianum x R williamsianum and therefore more temp tolerant than the R grande crosses.

Also, just a dumb question: What does tipo mean? I've thought it was referring to the original description of the specie and not a variant?

Bert, I know that Rossioglossums were carved away from Odontoglossums due to the position of the lip but they didn't go far. All of these orchids are still in the Oncidium alliance and therefore, by definition, can be crossed or hybridized with each other. I also know that Rossioglossums are notoriusly hard to hybridize, even with each other, so there arn't very many floating around out there. I think Ros. grande was crossed with Onc. splendidum (also called Trt. splendidum) but that hybrid was never registered, thus no name. I found that a Ros. X Onc. is a Rossitolidium; a Ros. X Miltonia is a Rossitonia; a Ros X Miltoniopsis is a Rossitoniopsis and a Ros. crossed with a Brassavola is a Rothara. I don't trust that last one because normally a name ending in "ara" means is is a multi-hybrid of 4 or more genra. Potinara is a good example.

As for the word "tipo', it means "type" in Spanish and is often used as a subspecies or variety name. A good example is Cattleya bowringiana var. tipo.

I hope this helps.

Thx, Jim. I've never seen a cross, maybe they don't cross in that Rossioglossum is so very different genetically that they are not compatible. I'm speaking evolutionary tree. Or are sterile if they do cross in nature. I don't have my library of old orchid books anymore, I donated them to Memphis Orchid Society over 20 years ago. Well a very deep read is maybe to much for me now, anyway what we have learned in just the last 20 years could make relearning necessary.

Berta, I picked up a small Coel xyrekes, hopefully the bud on it didn't get kicked during transport, so it should open soon.

Jim, the last two years my vandas have bloomed during the fall/winter but then they just hang out all through the warm season. And I bought them in bloom at all different times of the year so I guess I thought they would continue to bloom around the same time; although, I know that's not always true. I'll be very surprised if I see a spike on one for the next four months at least.
