My frogs are waking up, not in full chorus yet, but every evening a bit stronger. I don't know what they are - they all live down at our farm pond which is quite a ways from the house. I suppose those little green guys. And some big toads - I remember my kids being somewhat scared of a few of those that they caught.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

I thought there was a rat stuck in my gutter on thursday. I kept hitting the gutter, but nothing ran out. Finally, after giving myself a case of vertigo turning my head, I found a cuban on a leaf outside the screen, and another on the roof inside the screen, at the top of the gutter. Its been in the 30's the last few nights, so wherever they made it to, they are still there. The grunts or whatever they were doing, very weird sound. Guess one of them was a horny male Whistling

Ewww, you got yourself a nasty, invasive Marine Toad there, Brandon. I hope you euthanized it.

They secrete a toxic substance in those big glands behind the eyes, and if your pet gets it in their mouth, they can die. If you get it on your skin, it causes an awful irritation, too. Here's the UF info on Bufo marinus - scroll down the page to where it shows the diff between that one and the Southern Toad (which is native and not toxic).

http://www.wec.ufl.edu/extensi...

I got a good picture of a Cuban Tree frog, our other nasty invasive frog here in FL - would you believe she was brazenly sitting on a plant in the greenhouse at the local Botanical Garden? The females are a lot bigger than the males, and this one was at least 3in. long.

Elaine, Brandon lives in KY now but I saw on another post he apparently used to live in central FL. I imagine these photos of the BUFO are from when he lived in FL.

Yeah,I lived in Tampa for a few months, and I always found them.
I don't kill any animals, invasive or not,it's man's fault not theirs that they are here.
I'm a big reptile, and amphibian fan,so I knew what they were, and how to handle them without them releasing their toxin.
I actually wanted to keep one as a pet,but their demands would be too much for me to maintain,so I released them all.
Thanks for the welcome, and replies guys and gals Smiling

Concerning the toad: Is the toxic secretion Bufotenin? That chemical is an hallucinogen spurring a craze known as 'toad-licking' in the 1960's.Those so ingesting would trip out. It is said to be similar in effects to DMT, a psychedelic tryptamine. It was also utilized by shamanic cultures (like some tribes in the Amazonian Basin of South America) for magic and divination.
Toad lickers - yuksville.

I have several in my garden.
Dogs can get addicted to mouthing them but dying is more common. People will smoke the skins rolled with tobacco.

They have invaded most of the north of Australia now. They couldn't be stopped. The adverse impact on native frog-eating fauna has been awful.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Anything that kills off those nasty invasive frogs sounds like a good idea to me. They're killing - and eating! a lot of our native species.

Here in France we get lots of small green frogs, some bright green, others darker - I imagine (but don't really know) that they are tree frogs. This year I found one (inside the filter of our koi pond) with neat gold banding. Does anyone know what it is?

These don't survive where I live but are sold as exotic pets. They recognize their owners and learn to beg for food and get used to being handled. As long as people wash their hands after handling they are no danger.
