Poppies of some sort? I think I've seen photos of those before. But I could be wrong.

I ran across this site. 40 of the world's weirdest flowers....some I have seen before, some were new to me.

This Iris had an extra beard and was missing one of it's standard.. Of course, it's a pretty weird Iris to begin with. The rest of the flowers last year were normal.

I grew these 'Black Cherry' Tomatoes one year.. They didn't have a lot of flavor, but were really pretty.

That's not showing in your post, Stefan. At least I can't see it there. I threw out some poppy seeds this year. Not this one. Probably a waste of time. I've never had them grow very successfully here. Maybe for a little while they will do okay.

Ah. Those must be the ones that are supposed to have the little baby pods around the normal seed pod. They're commonly called Hen and Chicks poppies. I've heard that formation isn't a reliable repeat from seed, but I've never tried them. I just grow the normal ones. They will be lovely, regardless!

Papaver somniferum grow just fine here; it may be that they don't like too much heat? I get volunteers from the ones that were growing here from 15 years ago even yet, and I can start them in my GH and they will do fine, although I have to be very careful to plant them in biodegradable pots, because they don't like having their roots disturbed.

I don't think I've ever actually tried Papaver somniferum. I do think it is our summers and my specific location. The annual poppies will last 3-4 years by reseeding, but every year there are fewer and fewer until there are none (reminds me of an old Agatha Christie whodunit - 'And Then There Were None' or something like that Smiling ). The reason I think it's my specific location is because when I was in Jr High and lived about 7 miles from here in a spot that had different soil, the Shirley poppies were as reliable as grassburs about reappearing every year from seed. I also think the hot climate isn't friendly to poppies when it puts in an appearance too soon. Not even annual poppies.

I know we're getting just a tad off topic here, veering off onto poppies, but I do believe that the Shirley poppies, along with California poppies, don't like cold winters. I've never had volunteers from the ones I've planted here in the frozen northland. But the somniferums seem to prefer a nice cold winter.
And that will be quite enough about poppies, except to hope that Stefan will let us know how his Hen and Chicks do! Smiling

You know some straaaaaaange plants, Stefan!

I think my favorite was Euphorbia globosa, but the "sausages hanging from strings" tree was a close second.
