Thanks for pointing out that many people just tend to be lurkers and it may not mean a lot that they posted one question and then vanished from sight.
I used to think that getting 10-20 eager and cheery answers in the first two hours might be scaring some people away!
Like posting an index card on a bulletin board, planning to check back in week to see if anyone answers, and suddenly finding yourself in the center of a mob of people trying to talk your ear off before you can turn around.
Maybe I'll make a habit, if I'm the 5th person to respond and the original poster is still like a deer in headlights, to say something like "Though we would love to know if any of this sounds related to your question, it is OK to use the site without becoming Chaty Kathy."
Like Seedfork (Hi Larry!) I feel natural elbowing my way in. Maybe that gets intimidating to some people, if a half dozen people have all jumped into the thread before they even check back.
