CindiKS said:Rita, I had to prune many of mine to the ground too. Some had tree trunk sized canes that required loppers and a saw!

I do some really serious pruning and cutting back early each spring. But not usually needing to cut them back this far!

I pruned roses around my birthday in late January in Los Angeles. Here on the patio in pots I pretty much prune & putter year-round!

@CindiKS So delicate & pretty, she is! And so nice to get a mini with a good scent! Someone (not me!) will know what it is --

I have a little rose the store called "Daniela" ready to bloom & can't find it to add to my plant list. It's a miniature & I haven't seen it bloom yet (so I don't know what color it is) but a young woman I adore named "Daniela" left me with her rescued cat and, well, you know the rest of that story! I have a flower I can't name & a cat named Willie!

Another unidentified mini; is this where my 'Jennifer' landed?

Here's an entry for Daniela. It's supposed to be an apricot blend.

Still working away at the rose pruning. So much dead wood on even the healthy ones this spring. Of course they don't look like much this time of year, not even leafed out. Their pruned back so there really isn't anything to look at. But once the leaves come out they grow quickly and bud up. Can't wait.

I worked on moving a few Roses around today. The weather has been gorgeous! I moved Eden to the pink bed side of the arbor, and Red Cascade to the bed of fiery colors- I've had a tough time settling on a home for both of those, but I think I've got it this time. Julia Child had just sat there for over a year, so she's now in a bed with more sun and lots of compost. When moving her, I noticed a wad of light colored medium still clinging to the plant, but different than the potting medium I had noticed originally. I think this was whatever they used to root the cutting in. Seemed odd to me it would still be present and had not decomposed. I recalled Zuzu's thread about potting medias, and wonder if that had something to do with the plants failure. I shook it all off, and now she's in dark, rich soil- fingers crossed. Received an email saying Palatine plants are arriving tomorrow, so I got 9 of the 11 massive holes dug today.

You did a lot! I have done my fair share of moving roses myself thru the years. Now I don't want to have to dig up any roses.

I went to Lowe's yesterday and saw a great big Ketchup & Mustard rose. It was in a 5-gallon container and was much bigger than the one I've had growing in the ground for a few years. I had just bought another one from Rosemania, so I already had two of them, but this one was so bushy that I happily paid the $23 they were charging for it. When I got home, I noticed that there are two roses in the container. That explains the size, I suppose. A fabulous deal at $11.50 per rose, I think. I did once say that I wanted that rose in several parts of my garden, so now I'll have four of them. Smiling

Zuzu, will you split the 2 apart that are potted together?

Yes, Neal. I'll plant them separately. They're almost ready to bloom, so I'll wait until they've finished.

Sue, I just remembered that I bought my second K&M from Harmony, not Rosemania. Harmony's roses this year are a disgrace! I bought two -- Crescendo and K&M. They weren't bare root; they were potted in some bark-based medium and the roots had been cut severely to fit into the container. Both started suffering from black spot before anything else in my garden, and worst of all -- they suffered from die back. It was so extreme that I ended up pruning all the canes down to little nubs. They're showing new growth now, and it looks good, but I'll never buy potted roses from Harmony again.

They must have a bad source this year. Too bad.

My first boom of the year was a Double Knock Out:

My second bloom of the year was of course a NOID: A plant I found tossed out by the road has now provided me with two beautiful plants.

Doing really well on the rose pruning project. Today I cut back all the roses out in the very, very front bed that I call Floribundaville.

Still have more roses to prune but lots done. After I finish with the pruning I will put out the Rose Tone that I bought yesterday at a local nursery.

What a great find Larry! Beautiful!

I received my Palatine order yesterday, and I completely understand all the praises! Excellent plants, and I had to make some of those giant holes bigger! It felt really good to plant Roses again, then it rained most of the night- perfect!

Happy Easter! Lots of crocus in my southside rose garden. About the only thing to see as I cut those roses was back just about to the ground.
