Neil, it seems today is a huge wedding day--a lot of people getting married on Super Pi Day! We did lots of orders for engraved wine barrel staves for table markers with pi day references. I love those green roses. Is that a garden rose, or just a tender florist rose?
Our weather has been perfect all week, and it's so tempting to go ahead and prune the roses. They are starting to leaf out. So often, we get that late freeze that zaps the early growth. The death toll on hybrid teas may be as much as 75%. The local botanical garden may have lost all of their HTs. Good time to upgrade the selections, I think!
Rose orders from Palatine, Edmunds, and Austin should arrive in the next few weeks. By then, I'll have a clear idea of which roses need to be removed. Hopefully by then, my body will be in good enough shape to dig the deep deep holes needed for Palatine roots. The little trees from Forestry won't take nearly as long to plant as the huge roses.
My husband is working locally this year because of my injury, so I just may have some assistance. I hate to ask him for help because right now, he is outside building our new barn by himself! I ran the backhoe yesterday, lifting him in the bucket so he could fasten timbers. Help is hard to find here.
My math-whiz daughter is drawing a plan for the drip lines, and she's offered to come home Easter weekend to help with that project. There are flower beds and trees all over the 10 acres, so it's a huge project. I had hoped to grow only plants that survive without irrigation, but the drought the last 2 years has shown that nothing will survive without some supplemental water, and I'm tired of dragging hundreds of feet of hose all over, every day. It takes a full week to water everything once. Not an efficient use of my time. Sticking tongue out

Cindi, spring is a tough time to be healing and unable to do the many tasks waiting when the snow melts! Accept help, and try not to stress over it- that certainly doesn't help with healing. Thankfully we had deep snow cover during the record breaking cold, but I see there are lots of dead Rose canes out there that were above the snow line.

'Green Tea', the green Rose above, is a florists hybrid tea. I do use Garden Roses a lot for weddings, they're such a joy to work with- the whole workroom is filled with the fragrance.

So yesterdays rain washed the snow off the southside rose garden area so that I can see where bulbs are popping up all around the roses. I have 600 crocus in there, I see foliage in soume places but no buds yet. Those crocus should look pretty there. Then there are also lots of daffs and wood hyacinths. Plus some tulips all in that rose garden. I love it in the spring.

I am going to have to get those roses pruned heavily as I do every spring. Still to wet and soggy out there to start on that as yet but very soon.

Done! I'll be using a lot of different varieties of Roses this spring and summer, and lately they've been marked with the variety name on each pack, so I'll be sure to get photos of them. Still waiting for the wedding coordinator to send me pics of the bouquets, hoping she got some nice shots...

Gorgeous, Kelli!

I've been out cutting the dead tops off the Roses, and thanks to that great article from Zuzu a while back, that's all the pruning I'm doing. As much as I hated all that snow, it protected the canes beautifully and I'm seeing lots of swelling growth buds.

Thank you, Neal.

DH pruned the roses for me this year. He doesn't know anything about proper rose pruning, he just cut the top 1/3 off but it did the trick. The pruned rose bushes are looking much better than the unpruned roses.

Kelli .... I loved reading this. It was a couple of years after I bought my home before I could get my deer fencing up. The deer had been pruning the roses out in front for almost a decade. Since they didn't know anything about proper pruning, they just did it their way ... Hilarious! The roses are fine.

Your 'Blue Girl' looks wonderful. I am so glad you added a photo of the whole plant to the database. I have to remember to do more of that, too.

Smiles,
Lyn

Felt cold this morning but later in the afternoon it warmed up some so I decided today was a good day to start on the spring pruning of my roses. Started off in the southside rose garden.

I had been looking there and it seemed like an excessive amount of winter damage. So after pruning I feel like I have many totally dead roses. Not the own root ones, those seem to be fine but in this bed I have many grafted roses and so many look to be totally dead.

I plant with my grafts way below ground and these roses have been there for many, many years. But this past February was simply brutal cold temps and record lows for us so hard on the roses.

I also did rose island but those are all own root except for one. And I think that one is totally dead. Depressing.

I have lots more roses to prune, this was only the beginning.

It is possible for shoots to come from under the ground. Not so likely but I think but it could happen. I pruned them down, I don't intend to dig them out so we will see. Plenty of time for them to grow if they can.

Just the very begining of spring. I should have daffs blooming all around the garden but it has been so cold there is nothing.

Rita, I had to prune many of mine to the ground too. Some had tree trunk sized canes that required loppers and a saw!
Can anyone identify this lovely mini? It is pale yellow with pink splashes on the outer petals, and it has a sweet fragrance.
