Hi Beverly

Sometimes I trip on the same thing when trying to make a link that someone else can follow. I forget the situation, but there was a way for me to create a URL that led ME to MY info, but led other people back to THEIR OWN info.

One solution is to log in AS someone else. Unless someone offers you their username and password, the only way to take advantage off that would be to create a PHONY login and use it only for checking how your lists look to other people.

My guess is that Dave would NOT want lots of ATP members doing that, creating large numbers of mostly inactive, false, login accounts!

@Dave, would you be receptive to my creating ONE bogus login, let's say username = "NotARealPerson"
password = "Password1"
...
and offer that publicly to anyone who wants to double-check the way their lists and links look to other people?

Rick...it is nice to talk to you again. Do you remember some of our conversations at BrandXGarden site? I've been following you and Metro on the sandbox and you are as hilarious as always and Metro is showing his funny side as well (it was such an effort to stay out of the beer conversation, you have no idea). You two are a crack up and i have to use lots of will power not to jump in but i really need to get off this computer now!!!

I think that is such a super idea of having "NotARealPerson" (Password 1) username. That would enable people to see if what they have done is what they intended to do and it would be available right away to make any kind of troubleshooting so much quicker and easier without having to bother the other members. I think it is a perfect solution...i hope Dave agrees. The members hopefully will not log on and then forget to log off, or just generally hog the log-in although i don't know why they should.

I seem to recall that dave once suggested just opening a "private" window in FF, one that doesn't save cookies, in order to view your profile as others would see it, without logging in. I tried that, and it worked perfectly. I was able to see my lists as others would.

Thanks, I never realized that was an option. I'm not sure whether i "stay logged in", or if the shortcut I use re-logs me in every time I come here.

But that might another way to get the "other person's view". Just log out, then come back to http://garden.org without logging in.

I think "FF:" is FireFox, (a browser), not Facebook.

Sure, Bev, I do recall. It has been a few ... months? ... years?

How are Junior and the moringa trees doing?

Yes, Rick is right. Sorry about the confusing abbreviation! FF was intended to mean Firefox, which is the browser I use. Heh, that could be confusing if you're not using Firefox.

Okay, here is the info--you tell me--am I doing it wrong or is my browser preventing something?

Firefox 36.0.1 NoScript AddOn w/ATP allowed
In the category control panel, I added a new category, selected private, and clicked on add the category.
The new category appeared in the list.
I went to my user images page in a new tab and added a plant to the new category--clicked add plant, got the dialog box that says Plant added! and asks me to chose to either access my plant list or close the box. I closed the box. I refreshed my images page and the plant showed as in my list.
I then added a few more plants the exact same way to some of the old categories.
When I checked to see what can be seen by all,
all of the plants that I had just added were visible, and none of the plants that I had successfully edited to be invisible earlier in the day could be seen.
I then went to my lists management area where I could edit the plant that I had just added, clicked on the edit icon, and then edited nothing but selected save changes in order to make that plant become private.

I added another plant from my images list. This time I chose to access my plant list instead of closing the box. I was hoping to edit it right there and save changes. It took me away from the page I was working from to my plant list, where I had been last, but not to the plant that I just added or to the category I added it to. I then had to figure out what I just added so I could go find it to edit it--which was kind of annoying because I neglected to pay attention to what I had just added Rolling my eyes.

I also added one from the database to see if that was any different. It wasn't.

And in the end, I found that re-editing each of the categories to save changes was easier than editing each plant.

Anyway--the point is--I don't think the private plant list feature is working quite right for me.
If I have a category designated as private and I add a plant to that category without either accessing the plant in my plant list to edit it or the category to edit it with each new addition, the plant is added to my list and it, along with the category name, appears as public.
(good thing I got that category name back to private ~whew~)

No woofie you can't be sorry for this. It is my sorry...i am so used to people referring to FB that when i see that first "F", i immediately think of the dreaded by some and cherished by others FB. So please excuse me for the misunderstanding. Actually i also use Firefox and have done for a number of years but have never seen it abbreviated as FF. Also, it is always so much in the background just working away i don't think about it much. Wow, so you can open a private window there? That's interesting to know for possible future use. Still for the purpose here i think @Calif_Sue came up with the super idea of logging off and looking at the site from a visitor's point of view. I will usually opt for the quickest, easiest solution that works. Smiling

@dirtdorphins...i've not returned to my plant list to continue work on it so this is the little bit that i think i know now.

To begin with, In the category panel, you first need to go to the "Edit" function (pencil and paper) on the right of the screen, click on edit, then add a category, select the option Private view and save your changes. If you use the "edit" function to create a category first, select private, then save changes then all the plants you add to that category should be only viewable to you. You don't need Firefox...just leave it alone.

@RickCorey...oh gosh, i think it has been years. I think we both must have been kids when we were chatting at brandx Hilarious! How is your giant delphinium? And didn't you have some singing, giggling flowers growing near your fence? or on the other side of your fence peeking through?

Junior is no longer with us RIP, but i was looking at some garden photos and saw some photos of him just the other day...such a handsome little guy but so spoiled and really bossy. Those moringa trees need to be kept pruned or they will grow 60+ feet tall quickly. My neighbors 2 doors down let their 2 trees grow and grow and grow and they broke up all sorts of pipes and broke some walls and part of their house foundation. For a couple of days they didn't have any water coming in to their house and came over to get water from me in large containers...what a mess and with 3 little kids too. For awhile i grew moringa in a tree pot (after seeing what it could do). In the mornings i would go out and snack on the leaves...really nice, very tasty with a radish flavor to them. I think a tea would have been very nice too but i never got around to making tea and didn't keep the trees for very long.

I live at the base of one of the most active volcanoes in the world and in November of 2014 it started acting up and has been acting up ever since, spewing ash (which the wind takes away to the northeast), boulders, lava. It has been really exciting and so far has not been much of a danger to people and i don't believe there have been any evacuations of people who live on the mountain. It has blown its dome completely, there is so much natural power it is both so awe-inspiring and mesmerizing, there is room only for fascination but not for fear of any kind. This mountain volcano evokes a kind of reverence and love in the people here (and me too). It is so very cool. So what's new with you and how have you been? I have enjoyed reading your posts in the sandbox adios DG. Ciao for now, i'm sure we'll be bumping into each other from time to time around here.

@Dave

Using the same browser as Dirtdorphins, Firefox 36.0.1, I'm getting the same results.

I added new plants trying both the button in the plant lists management area & the button in the plant's database entry.

I placed the added plant only in one category which was already set to be private view only.

When I checked the public view using a private window in Firefox, the added plant in a private category would appear in the list.

When I returned to my regular window (logged-in,)
I clicked the icon to edit the plant list entry.
I made NO edits & only clicked "save changes"

When I checked the public view again using a private window in Firefox, the edited plant would then disappear from the list.

I repeated the test several times with different plants and had the same results so there does appear to be a bug in the system when adding new plants.

Later, I added two new plants only to the private category.
Again, they both appeared in the public view.
I went to my manage categories page and clicked edit on the already private category.
I made NO edits and clicked only "save changes."

When I checked the public view again using a private window in Firefox, both newly added plants in the "edited" (but really unchanged) private category disappeared from the list.

Perfectly submitted bug report, thank you! I was able to follow your steps and I replicated the issue. I'll track down what's causing this and fix it. Thumbs up

Okay, this bug should now be fixed. If you could confirm, I'd be grateful. Smiling
