I planted Nasturtium seeds today. I used to buy plants but I wised up as they are so easy from seed. I also planted Sunflower seeds as I love sunflowers. Always so pretty. Usually I have a volunteer or two but nothing this year so I will have to rely on starting my own.

I put some fertilizer on my many new tomato plants as I want them to get well established. I also weeded some but not sure that is worth mentioning as there is always something to weed ha-ha.

One of my tomato plants died and I am not surprised. It looked like a limp noodle from the time I planted it and it was an extra. Not counted in my official count. Oh well. I have plenty of others.

I dug up three large well established clumps of daylilies. I replanted one in another location and two I am giving to my friend. I have no room for it. Now I can use that place I moved them from to plant pole beans.

Marilyn, the basil issue came up at the community gardening meeting! Master gardener said not to plant sweet basil as ALL of it has a virus and will spread it to your other plants. She said this was determined from last years crop, and I remember my basil did have the symptoms she described! That's too bad, as I have lots of seedlings! She said all the gardening vendors(except big box stores) know this and are not offering sweet basil this year. Can't speak for your area of state, but I assume that's why you are leery of planting it? She said to plant purple basil, lemon basil, or lime basil instead. Those do not carry the virus.

What? I didn't know this! I bought my basil at a local well respected nursery. Mine said Italian Large Leafed and I also have Compact Genovese. I plant them in huge pots on my kitchen stoop.

I'm finally done with my culinary competition at work. My Team (Wayne Hills Sports Bar Theme) won for the People's Choice award. That's the award all the kids in the competition want. I am absolutely exhausted, worked two 14 hours day and yesterday pulled a seventeen hour day. Got home last night at 11pm with the sorest feet I've ever had and had to be back to work this morning at 6am to open up. I'll be cleaning my school kitchen for the next week. OMG it's so disorganized. That's what happens when you let 50 high school kids prep for a culinary competition

Just did a walk through my veggie garden and it's doing fantastic. Will have to water tonight as it's so dry. Looks like all my nasturtium, marigold, purple and cinnamon basil and potatoes are all up. Hoping to get some pepper plants planted this weekend but not before I get some SLEEP.

Well, all that said, I visited the largest local nursery in town today, and low and behold, the had tons of sweet basil for sale! I bought 1 plant of curly purple basil, and saved my seedlings. I emailed the master gardener for clarification/advice. will let you know her response.

Never had a problem with basil...I usually grow from seed, but I also buy a few plants.....only leery of planting because I'm afraid of colder weather coming in next week......down to 40 for a few nights.....Karen, you sound like one tired person! Glad your team won an award.....I remember doing a Rainforest Cookie Project with my 7th graders in the home ec kitchens.....guess who was left with that mess!

IT is so warm I can't image frost now. It has really felt like summer here for these past few days.

I can see growth already on many of my tomato plants. I planted those out on May 2 thru May 4th by the time I got them all in.

Rita-was just talking to an African violet grower in Colorado, they had a blizzard this weekend! His hummingbird feeders froze! The poor hummingbirds were struggling trying to eat! he had to thaw the feeders and make (and keep) warm food in his feeders all day! Nothing new planted in the ground yet-cool spell coming. Lots of seedlings, veggies, summer annuals in pots on my sunny porch...waiting to be planted. takes forever to keep them watered on these 90 degree days! Better than snow though!

Yep, I saw the snow out there. But that is far away. I don't think of frost in our general areas.
