Marilyn, the basil issue came up at the community gardening meeting! Master gardener said not to plant sweet basil as ALL of it has a virus and will spread it to your other plants. She said this was determined from last years crop, and I remember my basil did have the symptoms she described! That's too bad, as I have lots of seedlings! She said all the gardening vendors(except big box stores) know this and are not offering sweet basil this year. Can't speak for your area of state, but I assume that's why you are leery of planting it? She said to plant purple basil, lemon basil, or lime basil instead. Those do not carry the virus.

What? I didn't know this! I bought my basil at a local well respected nursery. Mine said Italian Large Leafed and I also have Compact Genovese. I plant them in huge pots on my kitchen stoop.

Well, all that said, I visited the largest local nursery in town today, and low and behold, the had tons of sweet basil for sale! I bought 1 plant of curly purple basil, and saved my seedlings. I emailed the master gardener for clarification/advice. will let you know her response.

I can see growth already on many of my tomato plants. I planted those out on May 2 thru May 4th by the time I got them all in.
