L. henryi White bicolor with a friend, a SHY friend.
If you only knew how much time I have wasted chasing after hummingbirds and butterflies that are just about up my nose-until I get the camera.

Wow Lisa! Thanks for not doing your taxes Smiling The Shasta Lily is something I have always wanted to try, but I don't know if it makes it here in zone 5. Beautiful pictures.

Shasta is very picky and very slow to grow. I am trying to cross it with other western species hybrids but it doesn't want to cooperate on that either. It should be plenty hardy since it is a higher elevation grower. The picky growers do best planted with other plants (trees and shrubs too) they seem to need competition to perform well. They also need to be buried in brush in the wild to avoid being eaten by deer.

Stunning. I see you have those close to the house, Jmorth. No staking? Do they get a lot of sun? A few years ago I planted so many henryis, and I love them, but the leaning is so extreme for me and out of control. Can't even call it leaning. More of a wiggling. They shimmy every which way and can't really be helped up. I think I wish instead I'd gone for pardalinum for my big species statement. I think they're hardy here, yes? (jmorth is in my zone but grows so many exotic beauties that I could never grow!) I did see some this weekend locally. Beautiful. I love them in that just ripe stage, just before the buds open.

wickerparker,
They are situated next to a slab of concrete that is next to the garage, their feet are covered by a luxuriant growth of spearmint, no staking. They are partly sheltered by a privacy fence on their south side. The fence, slab, and spearmint all contribute to their healthy display. They receive a fair amount of sun for about 2/3rd of the day.

I'm surprised at the spearmint covering, jmorth. I thought spearmint would be too much for lilies. Great now I have another place to plant lilies. In my mint collection.

By the way, if anyone has grandkids, or kids, and is growing mint, my two grandchildren get Bazooka Bubble Gum, and then pick mint and chew it with the gum. They say it's better than any flavored gum. And they should know, LOL. They love the spearmint and Kentucky Colonel best.
