Speaking of torquoise, Spoon has some lovely shades in the new intro SDB's.

Bursting Bubbles x Decadence =

Not a fantasy cross since this cross was already done, but the results of this cross gave us Another Woman, and what a is gorgeous Iris it is!

Curious, what varieties would any of you use in attempting a turquoise TB?

I would start with a tried and true blue like Absolute Treasure and add a greenish one like Green And Gifted or a yellow that is not warm with hints of orange.

What would happen if you crossed something like Anything Goes with Owyhee Desert?

X

Would you get colored standards? Would the colors of the falls blend together or create a different blend? Would I end up with a solid color? Would I end up with a monster?

I haven't learned to do a cross yet. Guess I need to check first if these were in bloom at the same time!

Some of the seeds that got blown all over my garage floor (and tossed out) were from crosses I did with Owyhee Desert.

Can pollen be stored? Possibly frozen? Lily folks do that, but I'm unsure for how long. I believe the pollen of a late bloomer can be saved in the freezer till the next year to use on an early bloomer.

I've had no luck with freezing daylily pollen, though other people do that all of the time. It might just be easier to store the pollen from the early bloomer in the fridge, and use that to cross onto the late bloomer.

For daylilies, I swipe the pollen onto bits of cotton balls, which were pre-stuffed into part of a gel capsule. I cap the capsule, then toss it into a ziploc baggie and into the fridge. When I pollinate the daylilies, I just touch the pistil into the capsule, making sure it picks up the pollen. I'm not sure how you would transfer the pollen from a gel cap onto an iris, though. Confused
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

I wonder if you could just cap a cotton swab with half a gel cap? Gather pollen on the swab, cap and refrigerate, then just pull the cap off and dab the pollen.

I would have planted them anyway just to see what happened.

Neal, I'm not sure how that would work. With pollen secured in gel caps, you can toss several gel caps from different pollen parents all into the same baggie.

If you are using Qtips to collect pollen, and then cap the Qtips, the cap could fall off, or pollen could maybe fall out. To keep control over the pollen ID, you'd either have to put each pollen Qtip and gel cap top into a different Ziploc bag (or pill bottle, or what have you), or else maybe wrap some foil around the whole cap+ Qtip shebang, to make sure that the gel cap top doesn't come off the Qtip (and/or that any escaping pollen can't get into another gel cap).

Your method, though, might solve the problem of how to use the stored pollen to pollinate the pod parent. Otherwise, you'd have to get a tiny brush or something to transfer pollen from the gel cap + cotton, onto the pod parent. (And then you'd need a new clean brush for each pollen parent. Unless you used Qtips for the pollen transfer - a method which I'm not sure how well it would work.)

Ah yes, foil would likely be better. I think some folks use swabs for dabbing pollen? I'd always thought I would use little paint brushes, but would have to be careful about cleaning well between uses- hadn't thought of that.

I will certainly have to play "I'm a bee!" in spring, LOL.
