I probably would not grow an iris named for the UNC Tarheels or Ohio State but sure as I say this a fantastically beautiful iris will be named Buckeye or Tarheel.

Some awesome ones everyone. I think the reason some vendors have to start later is that, like me, this time of the year it's almost impossible to see what you are going to have available as everything is under snow, unless of course you have fields full of them.

Several irises I have been looking for just because of their name are
Groovy Grubworm
Baby Barn Owl
Bonny Blue
Thunder Road.
.... And I don't care what they look like. Lol

Three I want for their name and love the way they look are
Priwall
Hummingbird's Blessing
Robin's Nest.
These have been very elusive.

Some I grow for their names are
Ask Alma, for a family member
Bit 'o Afton and
Maggie Me Darlin' - another family connection
Coyote Moon for the years I spent in the desert southwest
Fair Dinkum.... and this one really is fair dinkum
Halloween Moon, bought this for the name and my grandkids
Knotty Pine, just for the name
Missus Bee, I did not buy it for the name but will keep it for the name
Puddy Tat, had to have it for the name and then
Tweety Bird to go with Puddy Tat
Quapaw for the old Quapaw Quarter where I once lived for a bit
Route Sixty-Six, anyone who travelled our highways when they were young...... and just passing this little iris and reading its name brings back a lot of great memories....
Wabash, reminds me of an old song......

I would like to find Winkin, Blinkin and Nod and grow them together..... just for their name. I think they are from a hybridizer in France. Hard to find here.

I love Dodger Blue for its name as well as form and color. I got one from a very generous ATP member last year. I hope it makes it and grows for me.

I have Lady Glenna on my list to buy this year because of its name... a family connection.

A bit off topic, but on the subject of plant names...

We have a creek going through our yard, and every spring there is quite a frog chorus in the evenings. That got me thinking that 'Frog Song' would be an interesting name for a daylily seedling (there already being a 'Frog's Eye' daylily). I went to check the AHS database, but sure enough, somebody else had already grabbed that name. Grumbling

(Truly, I sometimes wonder IF I ever get a daylily seedling (or an iris seedling) worth registering, if any name I might want for that particular seedling would have already been taken. I have already seen quite a few iris names recycled as daylily names.)
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Poly, when a good name finds me, I put it on a list. Periodically check AHS to make sure it hasn't been taken even if I don't yet have a seedling to go with it. Did get to register one last Fall for publication this year. Fun stuff. Smiling

Sherry, I love his Chocolate Soup and Lemon Lunar Lander. Have had both on my wish list strictly for the names--best friend works at Mars and my father worked in aerospace. Waning on Chocolate Soup, but still plan on the Lunar Lander at some point. Big Grin

Hmm, I *think* those names all come from writers, artists, and others that probably Doug likes. If I'm not mistaken, "Why cows gossip" is from a "Far Side" cartoon. "Phasers on Stun" of course is from Star Trek. "Sings with frogs" may be a caption from another cartoon -- not sure -- probably one of a slew of them that came out after the film "Dances With Wolves." Not sure about "Typsy Gypsy." ??

Debra, I do have a running list of names for potential future daylily registrations (if ever Rolling my eyes. ).

And now I've started one for irises...
