I plant bare root roses whenever they are shipped to me. In the fall I mulch my rose beds with chopped fall leaves and that is all I do. Well, spring pruning of course.

I would pile up the canes up to protect them and leave it the for at least three weeks or until you remove your winter protection. Not only do I do this with newly planted bare root roses but also with roses that are not doing too well and with ones where I have pushed the zone a bit. Went shopping with a friend again. I bought Polynesian Punch, one of this year's new Star roses. It's pink, yellow, and orange and looks delicious. I also bought a second Classic Woman. I really love the shape of the blooms.

I also had another wound check and the news is bad. I'm not healing and I have to go to a wound care specialist. I apparently have a case of over-exuberant granulation, a condition that's called "proud flesh" in horses with wounded legs. Whistling

YIKES ! I just looked it up, too. There are more hits on how to treat horses than humans ... geesh.

Maybe you should see a vet, Zuzu ... they may have more experience in dealing with this problem ...

No, not really. I am sorry your wound did not heal properly. It's a good thing you had it checked out early on. I do hope the specialist can help you heal quickly.

I looked up Classic Woman. She is a lovely rose; I can see how one might not be enough. Although I have often dealt with proud flesh on horses, I have never heard of humans being plagued with it. Good luck, Zuzu! I hope the specialists can clear it up as easily as the vets do.

Sorry to hear the troubling news on your wound zuzu. Group hug

Its usually March when I start seeing growth buds swell, but we're almost there! Hurray! Lemon Fizz is most notably growing, but a few others are swelling. I've enjoyed hovering in the garden the last few days and doing some detailed spring clean up. Today it has turned colder with snow flurries.

Zuzu, that is troubling news - hope they get on top of it quickly! The season is just starting and you have to get your new roses in the ground! Polynesian Punch looks really lovely and Classic Woman is just amazing. Haven't seen either of them before. It really grates me seeing roses bred in France that aren't available here! Hope they do well for you.

It snowed all morning today, about 15cm, so I had to do some inside gardening. My seedlings are starting to germinate and I have to prick them out of the flats before they get to big.

Question: is anyone else into hybridizing/growing roses from seed?

I am trying this for the first time. Red Corsair had a couple of rose hips. Soaked the seeds in a combination of hydrogen peroxide and water. Planted them into plastic pots. And than buried the pots directly into the ground outside around Christmas time. So now it's just a matter of wait and see what develops. Margie Long Island

When there isn't much winter kill of canes, first flush is pretty spectacular here and if the health of the canes right now is any indication, it's going to be a colorful season! The fairy tale series from Palatine look great.

I'm particularly impressed with hybrid tea Beverly- I only see 1 cane that has suffered and it is one that grew in late fall and didn't have time to harden before cold weather came. The McCartney Rose typically dies back to the ground no matter how mild the winter is, but it looks surprisingly healthy so far.

I grew a few roses from seed though it was a long process waiting for seedlings to start,..i think the process took about 16 weeks,..the problem i had was keeping people away from the shelf in the Fridge where they were placed on a moist Kitchen Towel within a plastic bag,..not all the seeds produced seedlings,..of those that did i ended up with healthy bushes which produced blooms that didn't resemble those rose blooms i had in the garden,..though i expected that to happen.

As luck would have it i discovered a Rose Hip that had fallen to the ground,..went through the stratification process of Autumn and Winter then started to grow a seedling which i saved and it remained healthy and grew into a nice bush.

Neal, your roses are looking good. I haven’t seen much winter damage on the roses I don’t protect either – it has been exceptionally mild so far. The ones where I have pushed the zone a bit are still mounded and covered so it’s hard to tell. Looks like I won’t be opening them up too soon either, winter is back! It snowed last week with more forecast for this week.

Margie – good luck with your seeds!

Philip – agreed, it is a long process but an extremely rewarding one. I am by no means an expert and only started doing my own crosses about five years ago. The chance of creating something totally unique fascinates me! Each seed, even from the same hip, is different. Granted, a lot of the seedlings are similar. When I first started I kept every single one of them. As you can imagine, my pot ghetto became rather large. These days I limit the number of seeds that I sow to about 300 and a lot of them land up on the compost but it is the quest for that special rose that drives me.

These 6 seedlings are all from the same cross and show how different the results can be.

I find it very interesting to see how roses perform across the globe and even just within the USA.
Neal's photos intrigued me because we never ( or should I say, rarely) see what roses look like during winter where it snows.
With our mild winters here, most rose canes stay basically green, so it's amazing to me how those brown "sticks" come back to life. We do have a few trees here that go dormant, but other than roses, the only other plants I have that lose their foliage are hydrangeas and that's usually after the summer/fall heat has fried them to a crisp.

Those rose seedling photos are indeed fascinating !!! (And from Switzerland no less !)
How long did it take before you saw blooms ?
